NICU• Growth Goal • Support Autonomic Stability

The journey was intense and feels like a blur but then brings waves of fear, vividness, anxiety, gratefulness, acceptance, and strength to this day.

Position • Hand Holding: So simple, yet so powerful!

Month 3• Growth Goal • Arm & Leg Movements

While your baby is learning to move their head around and engage with toys, we highlight Arm and Leg Movements this month as baby starts to become aware of them. Getting baby to bat with hands, kick and hold both their feet helps build core strength and is the foundation for rolling in the next few months.

Position • Grab Feet: Place baby with socks on and help baby explore reaching for toes with hands. Can also do this barefoot, may start by bringing hands and feet together to help them learn.

Month 11 • Growth Goal • Standing

Now that your baby is starting to pull up on to furniture they will spend more time on their feet. This month we highlight Cruising/Standing. As your baby begins to stand they will learn how to balance and hold on to surfaces to step sideways. These skills set the foundation for strengthening hip, knee and ankle muscles to prepare for the balance they will need with walking.

Position • Standing Holding Toy: Baby's often feel more secure with something in their hand. Give them a toy to hold so they are distracted by it while practicing standing.

Month 6 • Growth Goal • Sitting

Your baby is getting stronger throughout their body and this month we highlight Sitting. Sitting without support is the foundation for your baby to learn how to balance and use their arms to catch themselves. Independent sitting will help your baby gain more core strength and allow your baby to start exploring how to use their arms to help move up and down from the floor leading to more movement and exploration of their environment.

Position: A swing can help the babys vestibular system that helps with balance and movement in space. This is a fun way to get baby used to faster movements.

Help Me Get Off The Ground!

Month 9 • Growth Goal • Changing Positions⁣

As your baby is more mobile, this month we highlight Changing Positions. Start placing toys slightly higher off of the ground, further away in sitting to encourage reaching or on a bottom step to encourage your baby to push up through their legs more. This sets the foundation towards getting up into a standing position. ⁣

Half Kneel: Start to help your baby get one knee forward and foot flat while the other knee is on the ground. This is a half kneel and a great play position to learn how to hold legs in an opposite position of each other.

We are a judgment free zone at PT Mamas! We know some babies will get tightness in their necks (torticollis) or flat spots on the back or side of their heads (plagiocephaly). We want to help you through some of these challenges. ⁣

One of the best places for growth and development is on a safe place on the floor to transition, strengthen, and EXPLORE! ⁣

Life can get hard and busy so we want to help guide you through your baby’s development. Contact us for in-home PT sessions, virtual PT sessions, and pdf growth guides for the 1st year of development.
