Wonderful spending time with friends and neighbors at ’s Juneteenth celebration yesterday!
As one of Georgia’s most diverse cities, I love how we can celebrate together even as we continue the hard work to fulfill this country’s full potential. Happy Freedom Day!

The kratom industry is pushing for a ban on 7-OH while presenting “whole leaf kratom” as natural, wholesome, and safe (though kratom is also addictive).
It should be noted, though, that banning 7-OH also eliminates kratom manufacturers’ main competition.

The way to address an affordability crisis is NOT by creating a new tax on everyday goods that hits working families the hardest.
Republicans are trying to sell you an election year bill of goods just to save their own seats. Don’t let them treat you like you’re stupid.

Republican lawmakers took the same oath we did to uphold the Georgia Constitution.
Yet they voted to pass SB 33 (which was unconstitutional), and are now frantically trying to fix it by raising sales taxes around the state, during a time of rising inflation and increasingly unaffordable everyday goods.
Democrats kept our word to our voters AND to the Constitution. Have you kept yours?

I’m all for discussing property tax relief. But it’s a strange argument to make for “affordability,” to raise sales taxes on everyday goods—disproportionately costing lower and middle class Georgians—to pay for cutting property tax only for those who can afford to buy a home.
One possible path for kratom regulation in Georgia could be standardization of presentation, concentration, and dosages of retail formulations.
Here Dr. Alaina Steck, Assistant Medical Director of the Georgia Poison Center, explains some of the current challenges for consumers.
There is significant interest on both sides of the aisle in better understanding and regulating kratom, a group of products sold at convenience stores and gas stations which present significant risk of addiction and public harm.

Juneteenth is a celebration of independence, and a reminder that the long, hard work to fulfill the promise of this country remains unfinished.
It also gives us a chance to pause, reflect, and recommit to that promise.
Happy Juneteenth. The work goes on, and so do we.
