We’re back with another weekly education session so let’s hop into it!
German Shepherd Dogs(GSD) originate from 19th century German herding dogs that varied depending on the region of Germany in which they lived. Eventually these German herding dogs were bred using the different strains found throughout Germany in order to develop the “ideal” herding dog.
Over time, the GSD that we know and love today was developed, but they were still used as herding dogs. As the need for the use of herding dogs began to diminish over time, the role of this amazing breed shifted with the help of a few famous GSDs who played roles on movies at the time. Now, we commonly see them used as working dogs in-law police and military dogs!
Personality:
GSD are very loyal and hard working dogs who are amazing, gentle family pets. They will go above and beyond for their humans which makes them incredible guard dogs. They are extremely intelligent, energetic, agile, and fast which makes them great for sports.
🐾Exercise:
These athletic creatures require a great amount of exercise to help promote both physical and mental stimulation. A GSD who is not properly exercised and mentally stimulated may develop undesirable behaviors (I.e. aggression)
🐾Training:
GSD are one the easier breeds to train as they are very intelligent and willing to please. Early socialization and puppy training followed up with regular obedience training are essential for this breed to help keep them on track and out of trouble😊

Appeasement gestures: These are forms of body language used by dogs in order to appear non threatening or to indicate that they need space. They use these signals on both other dogs and humans alike when they want let the other individual(s) know that it does not “want any problems.”
Examples:
🐶You walk toward an unfamiliar dog to greet it and it turns its head away from you, it yawns, or it licks its lips. This dog is communicating with you that it is not interested in interacting with you at this time or it is uncomfortable/stressed because he/she does not know you and you are approaching them.
Other examples include sniffing the ground, scratching, lifting their paw off the ground, moving slower, freezing, or the submissive grin that is often mistaken for a smile.
🐶Dogs speak a completely different language than we do as humans and they also interact with each other much different than we do with them and each other.
🐶It is always important to take the time to learn our pets’ language in order to prevent putting them in stressful situations which can erupt in to inappropriate behaviors (I.e. fear biting). Animals are extremely great at communication, but many do not understand this language and blame the dog when a situation occurs. 9 times out of 10 a dog will tell you exactly how it feels before it takes action and it is up to us to be able to read it and respect that in order to prevent stressful situations that can escalate.
