Today is the last day of Black History Month and it is important to recognize the history of Westernized mental health and how it often didn’t include people of color. POC also were not the ones providing the mental health care which caused disparities for people of color who were in need of mental health services.
This history is why it is so important to have therapists who are people of color. Having voices of color in the field is essential to the betterment of our communities. Therapists of color can provide cultural competence in the therapy room and help clients with various mental health issues as well as incorporating cultural aspects such as racial trauma, political issues, and more.
