Remnants of Tropical Storm Arthur will continue moving toward Georgia today. Expect scattered showers and thunderstorms ahead of the main system now through the early afternoon hours. Then the bulk of the system will move in later this afternoon/evening.
A Wind Advisory is in effect for a portion of North and Middle Georgia; including Metro Atlanta, Columbus, Macon and Athens. Sustained winds of 15-20 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph expected.
The Flood Watch has been extended to the east a bit, now covering Dublin. The Watch remains in effect for Metro Atlanta, Columbus, Macon, Albany and the Athens area. Multiple rounds of heavy rainfall is expected through Friday evening. Widespread rainfall of 2" to 4" is expected, with locally higher amounts of 5"+ possible.

Our drought conditions see small improvements again this week. For the first time this year, we have a tiny piece of Georgia that is not even in the "abnormally dry" stage. A small portion of western Floyd/Polk/Haralson Counties is right where they need to be. This makes up less than one quarter of one percent of the entire state, but it is the step in the right direction! The rest of North Georgia remains unchanged.
We have seen the biggest improvements week over week in South Georgia. The Level 4 Exceptional Drought area near Valdosta is gone. A large part of Southwest Georgia has dropped from a Level 2 Severe Drought to Level 1 Moderate Drought. A large part of Southeast Georgia drops from the Level 3 Extreme Drought to Level 2 Severe Drought. There is still a lot of work to be done along the Georgia Coast.
Scattered showers are likely through the weekend, with a larger weather system bringing more rain next week. As much as we dread the humidity this time of year, it does help saturate timber (aka wildfire fuel) better than just about anything.
The next drought report period ends on Tuesday and will be released next Thursday.

[5/26/2026] A Flood Watch is now in effect for almost all of North Georgia, the western half of Middle Georgia and portions of Southwest Georgia through this evening. Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas.

We have a chance of rain everyday across the state through the end of the month! The GFS model is showing a few areas that could see up to 6 inches of rain between now and Sunday, May 31st. This will not fall all at once, thankfully. But this will start to make up for our rainfall deficits. The Euro model is not as bullish, but it still shows most of Georgia receiving around 2 inches of rain between now and May 31st.

We have a few small improvements with this week's drought monitor. The Level 4 (Exceptional Drought) area in Northeast Georgia has rolled back to Level 3 (Extreme Drought). A small portion of the Level 4 area in Southwest Georgia has also eased back to a Level 3. We also an improvement for a small area in southern Richmond/northern Burke County, where we are back to Level 1 (Moderate Drought) stage, this spot makes up less than 1% of the state, but we'll take any improvement we can get. Keep in mind, the time period for this map ended Tuesday morning, so the rain from the rest of the day on Tuesday into Wednesday for South Georgia will not show up until next week's map.

This week's drought map remains exactly the same as last week's. Still 1/3 of the state is in the highest level, Level 4 Exceptional Drought stage. The data is valid through Tuesday morning, so the rain from the past 24 hours will not show up until next week.

[5/7/2026] The Tornado Watch in Southwest Georgia has been extended until 2:00 pm.
