Looking back at the end of last year with so much gratitude 🤍 Huge shoutout to our amazing members who served at the Ronald McDonald House in Savannah this past December. Thank you, Mary Kate, for spearheading and organizing such a meaningful service opportunity!

“This October, SOAP traveled up to Emory’s Hope Lodge, a facility for long-distance patients with cancer and their caregivers to stay while receiving treatment. We cooked spaghetti, bread, and prepared a salad for the residents. We got to eat together, hear their stories, and even compete in a pool matchup with some of the patients! Join SOAP next semester to continue serving our community at Hope Lodge!” - Madeline Mesaros | P2

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month! Check out this post to learn more about lung cancer like statistics, screening and diagnostic tests, risk factors, and symptoms.

Lung cancer accounts for approximately 25% of all cancer related deaths. However, in the recent years the number of new cases per year has continued to decrease. It is important to be screened if you fall into any of the risk factor categories or have noticed any signs or symptoms. Screening and diagnostic tests include LDCT scans, X-rays, sputum cytology, and a tissue biopsy.

Risk factors can include former or current smokers, people exposed to second hand smoke, exposure to radon or other carcinogens, person or family history, and living an unhealthy lifestyle.

Finally, some signs of lung cancer are cough that gets worse or will not go away, wheezing, chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing up blood, fatigue, and unexplained weight loss.

To learn more about lung cancer, check out the websites listed on the last slide!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer diagnosed in women in the United States. Breast cancer can occur in both men and women, but it's far more common in women.

Breast cancer survival rates have increased, and the number of deaths associated with this disease is steadily declining, largely due to factors such as earlier detection, a new personalized approach to treatment and a better understanding of the disease.

Breast Cancer Risk Factors:
-Being female
-Increasing age
-A family history of breast cancer
-A personal history of breast cancer or breast conditions
-Inherited genes that increase cancer risk
-Radiation exposure
-Obesity
-Beginning your period at a younger age
-Beginning menopause at an older age
-Having your first child at an older age
-Having never been pregnant
-Postmenopausal hormone therapy
-Drinking alcohol

Having one or even several breast cancer risk factors doesn't necessarily mean you'll develop breast cancer. Many women who develop breast cancer have no known risk factors other than simply being a woman.

Breast Cancer Risk Reduction:
-Ask your doctor about breast cancer screening
-Become familiar with your breasts through breast self-exam for breast awareness
-Drink alcohol in moderation, if at all
-Exercise most days of the week
-Limit postmenopausal hormone therapy
-Maintain a healthy weight
-Choose a healthy diet Thank you so much to .isabellaaaaa for an incredible post about October’s cancer of the month, Breast Cancer! 💖
