The overnight rain froze into a slick layer of ice that made exploring Frankfurt a bit tricky. And by a bit tricky, I mean a constantly shuffling, shambling, oh-that-was-close affair.

Despite the ice, though, we had a wonderful time. Being here on the other side of the world with good friends is an absolute treasure, a much-anticipated and much-needed infusion of joy and crazy and closeness.

We took to the streets, shuffling down to the river after a quick breakfast. We strolled across the iron footbridge. We explored the Frankfurt Cathedral. We checked out a market, and we did some grocery shopping. Turns out, all this fast travel ain’t cheap! We enjoyed an evening of hangouts at the hotel over sandwiches.

It was a lovely, lovely day made uniformly lovely by having our friends in town.

Christie took us to a restaurant this evening. It was transcendent.

Authentic Spanish tapas. Fried calamari. Tortilla de papas. Manchego. Pan y tomate. Roasted peppers. Sangria.

I think my spirit left my body.

As an aside, one of the things I am most proud of on this journey is out kids sense of culinary adventure. They’ll try anything., and more often than not, they love it. I can’t even list all the food they’ve come to love so far, but suffice it to say when this restaurant brought out roasted squid tentacles… They ate it. Easy mode.

These little foodies are rockstars. So proud of them.

And y’all, that FOOD. Can’t wait for Spain! Viva la Espana!

We woke up to rain pouring in our windows amid the strobing lights of a massive thunderstorm that had knocked out our electricity. It appears that the storm we’d been waiting days for finally hit.

At around 5 am.

After we closed the shutters and windows and tucked our concerned kids back in bed, we settled back in. At around dawn, I went up to our balcony. These clouds are the storm we saw as it moved past us, up against the dawn light.

That storm has finally brought some cool to La Ciotat. We’ll enjoy it while we can, because we only have a few more days here.
