MECHANICAL BANK ~ Early 1900s.
Mother bird feeds newborns.
Add in a small bear and a handle shaped as a snake.

Very clever assembly. A few cams, springs and steel wire connections keep it all in motion. Note the wings drop on bird, the newborns raise up and wiggle with open mouths, and the coin drops.

Challenging project. Non-working on delivery to workshop. First figure out how this all works! Plus worn parts. Spring missing. Body of bird needed welding.
Customer had this in his Detroit, Mich bedroom as a kid. He’s a senior citizen now. And very grateful.

HORSE CARVING - Restored Light, 1921
This restored light with a surprise history was recently delivered.

The customer grew up in Texas. She owned horses. The light was in her bedroom as a child. She didn’t know where it came from until it was taken apart for restoration.
-
When the light was received at the shop, I thought for sure the horses were cast. And possibly of a hard plastic. They were, however, very well done. Beautiful detailing and texture. I scratched at the underside of the horse. Wood! What the ? Hand carved! Who would/could do such work?

Hand carved horses. From 1921 ! All from one piece of wood including the carved ground they are supported from. (Not glued!) I removed the carved horses from the light base. Surprise… see photo. This was carved in Brienz, Switzerland - one of the finest and oldest wood carving schools in Europe.
-
The light was added at a later time including the wood.base. All was restored (finished w clear shellac) and rewired w new electrics. The customer requested a decorative feature of “rope" trim be added around the base. I used a twisted seat weaving material called “Danish cord”.

Beautiful. Functional. Interesting.

STORE DISPLAY
I repaired this old wicker settee years ago. It’s currently being used as a front window display in the Bloomin Crazy flower shop at 10th and Commercial (Main St), Astoria, Oregon. https://www.bloomincrazyfloral.com/

It’s already heavy tourist season here… many eyes get drawn to this well presented, lighted display - especially at night. It’s always gratifying to see your older work in use. Completed projects get picked up and paid for. And away they go… but where?

CHILDREN’s ROCKER
Very very small. A cane chair that had been previously converted to upholstery. The customer requested the same. Present for the first grandchild.

The frame was badly broken and split along the cane holes. I repaired and reglued the entire frame. The cane holes were filled with glued dowels and a plywood bottom was added for structural stability. Several coats of shellac finish and all new upholstery complete this kid’s treasure.

*** We give HIGH priority to family heirloom projects, vintage children furniture and antique nursing rockers.

SHIP RUNNING LIGHT
USS Arrow went aground in Long Beach WA. Feb 1947:
“The ship came ashore on the Long Beach Peninsula in Washington and locals quickly got to work picking items from rope to toilets and sinks off the ship”.
-
These lights were termed “running or masthead lights.” Oil burning. Reservoir on bottom. The top hinge cover was left open to vent when lit. Closed to put out flame.-
-
They were on each side of Navy boats. Green and Red lens on front of the ships. Allowed other boats to determine ship direction when traveling toward each other.

Note:
Red on port (left), green on starboard (right). Two boats facing each other pass red to red. green to green.

ENGLISH CANE CHAIRS
Estimated date to ~1830.
English Regency chairs. Georgian period.
4 of a 14 set shown.

The existing cane is very old... 75? 100 years? original? They have been somewhat protected by cushions. See photo of use.

Many of the seats were torn. The cane backs were in generally Ok condition, though some will be replaced. The structures were surprisingly excellent. The finishes all need cosmetic help.

They were caned at least once? previously, and definitely the decorative paint was retouched. There are maker marks underneath. There is no other known history.

Note that this is old English construction. The cane comes through the interior of the chair rails. These chairs were designed to have cushions. There is no perimeter binder, every hole is pegged on the topside. See removed pegs.

After new caning, cut pegs were inserted and colored. The finish was restored with a thinned traditional shellac.

The first delivery was Friday.
Big project.
