Known & loved for being disease & pest resistant, Illicium parviflorum is an awesome problem-free native substitute for Gardenias, Azaleas, non-native Rhododendrons, Pieris & so much more ๐Ÿ˜ฒ Illicium parv. Is an evergreen shrub that prefers part to full shade & likes moist well-draining soil, but it can adapt to drier spaces over time ๐Ÿ’ซ This is a straight species that can mature 15-20โ€™ HxW but there are cultivars of Illicium that stay much smaller, some options 5-6โ€™ & others 3-4โ€™ ๐Ÿ‘Œ I love all the plants for the landscape but Illicium can be quite the problem solver - they are not very susceptible to rot issues and they are quite deer resistant due to their super fragrant foliage ๐ŸŒฟ They get a whimsical red flower smattering their branches from spring through summer and delight both garden visitors & pollinators ๐Ÿฆ‹ Trying to create more privacy? Illicium grows rapidly and can offer you a dense luscious wall in just a few years ๐Ÿ™Œ Want to learn more about privacy &/or natives?! Did you know that the United States traded native flowering dogwood trees with the Japanese in exchange for the famous cherry blossom trees that engulf our capital every spring? ๐ŸŒธ Our native Dogwood tree has a rich history which includes Native Americans who use the plant for multiple different uses, both practical and medicinal, some say that it was even used to treat mange in dogs and may be where it get its common name ๐Ÿพ One of the trickiest things about dogwoods can be finding the right sunlight exposure for them ๐Ÿค” Dogwood trees prefer open wooded areas where theyโ€™re receiving partial or dappled light, or at least a space where theyโ€™re getting a break from the afternoon sun, especially during the summer months ๐Ÿฅต Dogwoods can sometimes adjust to full sun spaces, but it can be tricky & the leaves typically burn up in late summer when theyโ€™re in full sun, which causes early leaf drop โ˜€๏ธ Dogwoods are awesome trees for pollinators & early spring color ~ if you have an open, hot, sunny space but would like a native, take a look at Chionanthus virginicus (American Fringe Tree) or Amelanchier can., they are full sun tolerant native trees that get about the same size as a dogwood & offer a white flower in the spring ๐Ÿ’ซ

Did frosty temps get to any of your plants last night? Let us know in the comments below! Frosty weather can rear its ugly head on & off as we head into cooler temps and there are a few things you can do to help your plants handle the drops in temperatures better ๐Ÿ˜ฏ Mulch! Make sure your plantsโ€™ roots are protected with a nice fresh layer of mulch - we recommend at least 3 inches of an organic, undyed mulch because it breaks down better and allows proper respiration ๐ŸŒฟ Remember to water! The chemical process for water to turn to ice is slower than the process for your sry roots to freeze ๐Ÿฅถ Frost-cloth! For extra tender plants (marginal plants or plants with buds/flowers/new growth) Frost-cloth is a light layer of breathable cloth that can be anchored around your more tender plants and keep the frost off them, it is meant to be removed during the day so the plant can get proper sunlight โ˜€๏ธ Want 20% off retail pricing for these helpful items?! Our whole nursery will be on sale this Friday & Saturday 11/15-11/16 ๐Ÿ™Œ We sell Daddy Peteโ€™s pine bark & hardwood mulch which are great organic, undyed mulch options, we have tons of helpful tools for irrigation & we sell cuttable sheets of frost-cloth ๐Ÿ’ซ

One of the most asked after native perennials this year was Packera aurea, pictured here ๐Ÿƒ Not only is this a very hardy perennial that acts as a lovely ground cover throughout the year, but it will live in full sun, part shade or full shade and will tolerate almost any kind of soil as well as dry and wet conditions ๐Ÿ’ง The tall, yellow whimsical flowers in spring to summer attract and support pollinators ๐Ÿฆ‹ They are known to be found in open woods, in fields, along the coast, and many different parts of the United States โœจ As you can see, in the fall itโ€™s starting to get this lovely purple color, too ๐ŸŒธ I think the reason that we got so many requests for this plant is because of how easy it is to work with and how quickly it establishes, as well as being a lovely native plant ๐ŸŒฑ

One of the coolest and often overlooked hybrid native trees, would be Gordlinia, pictured here ๐ŸŒธ A pleasant combination of Gordonia las. & Franklinia (both native to the southeastern United States) this fast, growing hybrid sports flowers from late summer into fall, as you can see here ๐Ÿ’ซ It also begins to get a beautiful, deep, purple and red jewel, toned fall foliage that it actually semi holds onto throughout the winter season ๐Ÿ˜ฏ This plant is considered a semi-evergreen ~ as it establishes in the landscape, itโ€™ll hold onto more foliage during the winter over time ๐Ÿ‘Œ Maturing between 10 and 15 feet in height and width. This is a great tree for almost any space especially smaller spaces that are looking for a striking ornamental tree. The smelling camellia like flowers attract bees, and butterflies and is a great wildlife tree as well. Looking for something unique? Looking for something native? Come take advantage of the planting season while weโ€™re open still on Saturdays. Our fall hours are Monday through Friday 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM and Saturday 8 AM to 1 PM.

Have you been noticing the differences in fall color from year to year? Especially as of late? Some years we have better fall color than others and itโ€™s hard to understand why that necessarily is ๐Ÿ The best conditions for brilliant autumn colors are a warm, wet spring, a favorable summer (meaning not too hot & dry) and warm sunny fall days with cool nights ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ The amount of moisture in the soil also affects autumn colors ๐ŸŒง๏ธ Soil moisture has varied greatly from year to year and that is a contributing reason why sometimes we have brilliant falls, and sometimes we donโ€™t ๐Ÿค” It is also why sometimes youโ€™ll see great fall color in the landscape, but not necessarily in your garden, or the other way around.. it depends on how much water you are supplying ๐Ÿ‚ The changes in the length of the day and night also affect fall colors, as well as the cooling temperatures - so basically in early autumn, in response to the shortening days and declining intensity of sunlight the leaves begin the processes that start their leaf drop ๐Ÿƒ The carotenoids & anthocyanins that create the red & yellow pigments in the leaves, are present in the the leaves throughout the growing season but appear after the chloroplast is destroyed ๐Ÿ’›โค๏ธ Most anthocyanins are produced in autumn in response to bright light and excess plant sugars within the leaf cell cells. The veins that carry fluids in and out of the leaf gradually close off as layers of cells form at the base of each leaf. ๐ŸŒณ These clogged veins, then trap sugars in the leaf and promote production of anthocyanins. Once this separation layer is complete and the connecting tissues are sealed off, the leaf is ready to fall ๐ŸŒฟ

A myriad of autumnal joy, Itea virginica, aka Sweetspire, is a show stopper of a native both in spring and fall ๐Ÿ’ซ Long white panicle flowers with a lightly sweet aroma, smother the shrub in the spring and then a deep churning cauldron of fall color descends throughout the branches as the seasons cool ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Like many of our natives, itea supports pollinators and is a great addition to a pollinator garden or any native garden thatโ€™s trying to support wildlife ๐Ÿฆ‹ They attract butterflies, hummingbirds and bees and they support native birds ๐Ÿค They prefer lots of moisture in the soil and do best with consistent moisture throughout the summer months, they can be however very low maintenance once they are well established, especially if they are in part shade ๐ŸŒณ They can handle full sun, but of course they will still need moisture in those hot summer months ๐ŸŒž The upright, slightly cascading habit of this plant makes it very appealing to pair with pretty much anything especially native Tradescantia, Cinnamon fern & Cephalanthus occ. ๐Ÿƒ Fall color typically is best when there had been a somewhat rainy season, with the dry weather lately, many plants in the landscape are either skipping or shortening their fall color show ๐Ÿค” we will go into more detail on that tomorrow, give us a like & a follow to learn with us ๐Ÿ™Œ

There should be a Little Bluestem cultivar called โ€œFine Wineโ€ because they age just like the good stuff ๐Ÿท Schizachyrium scoparium, commonly known as โ€œLittle Bluestemโ€, is a wonderful native grass that offers bright blue and green stems throughout the summer that turn to an edgy firestorm come true fall ๐Ÿ‚ Amazing choice for erosion control, they are stunning in mass plantings and pair nicely with many flowering perennials like native coreopsis (tickseed) or native Solidago (goldenrod) ๐ŸŒฟ Great for dry, sunny spaces but can also tolerate wet feet and some shade - awesome choice for rain gardens ๐ŸŒง๏ธ Grasses are also a great design relief in a butterfly garden ๐Ÿ˜ฏ Often overlooked, many of our native grasses are actually host plants for many different butterflies and are an essential part of their life cycle ๐Ÿฆ‹ Planting native grasses in your butterfly garden helps create a more supportive habitat while also adding soft foliage and texture to the space ๐Ÿ‘Œ If you let their foliage stay throughout the winter, female bumble bee queens nest at the base of these kinds of grasses where they are protected until spring ๐Ÿซถ Whether you like to color inside or outside of the lines, we have a plant for you!
