Put away those rakes🍁 Here’s another friendly reminder from our friends at Virginia Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Program🤗
You don't need to rake your leaves this fall! Did you know that leaves can be chopped up or "mulched" with a mulching lawn mower and left on your lawn?
Chopping up, or "mulching" leaves and leaving them in place is a cost effective and time-saving means of leaf disposal, and it is another way of keeping yard waste out of the landfill.
To "mulch" your leaves:
- Inspect the site and remove sticks and limbs before mulching.
- Wear safety goggles and an air mask over your mouth and nose to protect yourself from debris and dust.
- Mow over damp leaves with a mulching mower (mulching moist leaves minimizes dust concerns).
- Keep your mower blades sharp and air & fuel filters cleaned
- There is only so much leaf matter that the mower can handle at one time, so use some common sense regarding how many leaves can be effectively mulched in a single mowing event.
Small leaf pieces will easily decompose into the soil and will not harm turf!

Mulching leaves and leaving them on your lawn has no undesirable effects on turf quality or color, growth, thatch accumulation, soil pH, w**d populations, or disease pressure.
A mulching mower is an effective tool to chop leaves directly back into the turf canopy without negatively impacting the turf.
One pass of a mulching mower over slightly moist leaves (right) greatly reduces leaf coverage as compared to the unmowed area (left).
