The Irene Wortham Center helps children and adults in and around Asheville with developmental and socioeconomic challenges live more independent, healthy, happy and full lives.

We have four vibrant programs: 1) Early Learning Center for ages 6 weeks-5 years 2) Adult Day Activity Program 3) Supported Employment Program and 4) Residential Group Homes. The Early Learning Center features small class sizes and teacher-to-child ratios of 1:4. Children with and without developmental challenges learn, play, and grow together in a supportive, loving environment. On site therapy services and healthy snacks and meals are provided. The Center is open Mon-Fri year round. The Adult Day Activity Program provides a comfortable and flexible atmosphere that encourages personal achievement and growth as well as productivity. The program provides a unique balance of activities that promote an optimal level of independence in daily living and offers socialization and interaction on an individual and group level. Trained and experienced staff strive to provide a variety of activities including art and music, cooking lessons, and community activities such as concerts, festivals, and volunteering. Compensatory Education is provided by Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College. The Center’s highly successful Supported Employment Program empowers clients to achieve the self-assurance and satisfaction that comes from meaningful, competitive employment. Dedicated job coaches provide one-on-one support to assist in securing and maintaining meaningful and competitive employment for individuals with developmental challenges. Job coaches train their clients to do the job and stay with them to fine-tune their performance until it is satisfactory to the employer. The residential program provides comprehensive, around-the-clock individualized care for children and adults. Each person is encouraged to participate in as many typical daily activities as possible. Our three homes are licensed as Intermediate Care Facilities for persons with mental retardation and funded by Medicaid and the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation.

Helping children and adults with disabilities in the Buncombe County area.
