Firestorm Books & Coffee

Firestorm Books & Coffee

Founded in 2008, Firestorm Books & Coffee is a worker-owned bookstore cooperative in Asheville, NC. Ⓐ Ⓔ Ⓥ Firestorm Books & Coffee is a worker-owned and operated enterprise dedicated to the creation of a world in which individuals have the autonomy, knowledge and resources to create fulfilling lives and communities free of oppression.

Our mission is to demonstrate the feasibility and desirability of a workplace based on free cooperation. We seek to sustain and nourish our collective through fulfilling work, personal empowerment and equitable compensation while providing a hub for anarchist thought and culture in WNC.

"The worker must have bread but she must have roses too." Labor union organizer Rose Schneiderman is credited with coining this phrase which was used in a 1912 textile mill strike in Lawrence, MA. Since then, "bread and roses" has become a popular refrain in poetry and labor songs to express the idea that workers deserve more than just the bare minimum we need to survive. Over a century later, workers are still fighting against a capitalist narrative that deems even basic comforts and desires as a "luxury."

The books, stickers, patches, and art that Firestorm sells may be considered "luxury items" by this narrow standard, but we are glad that if we have to sell something for our bread, it's these items that spark joy and radical learning.

If you feel inclined to treat yourself or a friend to a "rose" today, we are offering 10% off of our entire inventory through Sunday! Just use the promo code BREADANDROSES during checkout.

The Firestorm staff have decided to take today off so we can all enjoy the roses and other nature blooming all around us in West Asheville! We will be closed to curbside pickup today, but of course our website will remain open. We will resume pickups tomorrow at 11 AM 🌹 (-Esmé)

Earth Day flash sale on Environmentalism & Ecology books! 🌏

We had planned on making an inspiring post about the radical history of earth day "before it got corporate," but it turns out earth day was co-opted by politicians and green capitalists pretty much from the get go. We can expect to see a lot of posts about metal straws and taking shorter showers today!

Despite this overwhelming narrative of individualism, we also believe that today can prompt us to revisit the words of grassroots organizers, land back activists, water protectors, and others who have always been at the forefront of green resistance.

To learn more about these movements, use the coupon code EARTH2021 for 15% off all Environmentalism & Ecology titles through Saturday! (-Esmé)

Uplifting a few words from before-and-after the verdict:⁣

"As we wait for a verdict, let’s be clear: (1) a carceral system will never truly bring justice to our communities. (2) We must rebuild the whole damn thing to center human rights. (3) Real justice would mean George Floyd could be home tonight with his fiancee & his daughter."
—SisterSong⁣

"Whatever happens w this verdict, nothing has changed the underlying conditions allowing for the murder of Floyd in the first place. The killing of Wright & Toledo within the last month assure that without the annihilation of the criminal punishment system, we will be here again."
—Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor⁣

“Nothing will bring George Floyd back, and real justice can only be found when we make real investments in our communities, and move away from systems of state violence that destroy us.” —Dream Defenders⁣

"People’s justice would mean abolition. True justice would mean George Floyd being alive today."
—Twin Cities Encampment Responders⁣

"A single verdict cannot bring the kind of justice our communities deserve. True justice means we disentangle police from the idea of safety. We must fund our communities with the resources we know keep us safe and actually allow us to thrive." —ISAIAH⁣

"We are glad to see a guilty verdict on all counts for Chauvin, but conviction is not justice. Accountability is not justice. Jail time will not bring back George Floyd, Daunte Wright, or any of the other Black folks who have been murdered by police, in Minnesota or anywhere." —Minnesota Youth Collective⁣

"Upon learning a verdict had been reached in Derek Chauvin's trial, George Floyd's brother Philonise tells @/sarasidnerCNN that, for the rest of the country, this will be a historic decision, but for his family, it's a personal one." —Kaitlan Collins⁣

"I hope that people will allow themselves to feel what they feel, and then continue to fight for a world where this kind of violence would be unthinkable in the first place because there are no police or prisons."
—Micah Her

Stop the Camp Sweeps! 04/19/2021

Stop the Camp Sweeps!

Evicting camps and traumatizing the occupants has never promoted public health for the homeless or the wider community. But the City of Asheville has a long history of shamelessly exploiting its relationship with Homeward Bound of WNC to deflect criticism. It's time for all of us, including HB, to speak out! (- Libertie)

Stop the Camp Sweeps! Evicting camps and traumatizing their occupants has never promoted public health for the homeless or the wider community. Members of our collective wrote an opinion column for the Asheville Citizen-Times to address the city's attacks on the houseless.

It is a rational choice made in the face of inhumane conditions, in response to the unaffordable rent prices and pitiful wages." https://itsgoingdown.org/asheville-nc-autonomous-group-defends-unhouse-tent-encampament/

Adventure read aloud time! At the end of the month, our co-op is excited to host author Jacinta Bunnell for a virtual read aloud of "A More Graceful Shaboom," an adventure story about a spunky, non-binary protagonist named Harmon who finds joy in a magical purse. The story follows Harmon and their two moms as they unlock the key to their own inner joy and understanding of community.

"A More Graceful Shaboom" is one of the first children's books ever written to center a non-binary character who uses they and them pronouns and features LGBTQ characters seamlessly woven into a delightful, imaginative story. It is the first children's book featured in our ongoing event series with PM Press.

Today is your last chance to register for our free online event marking the release of "There Is Nothing So Whole As a Broken Heart: Mending the World As Jewish Anarchists." We'll be hosting a lively conversation with editor Cindy Milstein (@cindymilstein), contributors from Fayer Collective in Atlanta, and members of our local community.

In recent years, few authors have had as big an impact on our collective as Milstein. In addition to writing a short introduction to anarchism, they have edited a series of timely collections on topics like direct democracy, grief, and solidarity. These are books that we read together, recommend frequently, and explore through community events. And although its true that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, the evident care and consideration that goes into producing these beautiful volumes speaks to Milstein's approach to books as a form of community organizing:

"[M]y books are labors of love, words as weapons, spaces of intervention and inspiration, the art of resistance and prefiguration, my politics and passions, holders of many voices and much messy beauty, a provocation for honest and vulnerable rebel dialogues as well as honest and vulnerable rebel practices and experiments."

Our Co-op Story

We opened Firestorm Books & Coffee in May of 2008 and in 2014 we moved our project from its original location in Downtown Asheville to a larger storefront on Haywood Road in West Asheville. At 610 Haywood Road you'll find a unique blend of off-beat, underground and independently published materials. Additionally, we host a wide range of events, workshops, film screenings, fundraisers and presentations. Throughout the day, we serve organic and fairly-traded coffee, tea, and delicious vegan pastries made locally.

Our co-operative operates without bosses or supervisors, relying instead on well developed team structures. Decision making is achieved "horizontally," using a formal consensus process in which each participant has equal voice. This collaborative environment creates a more empowering and enjoyable workplace while strengthening the business itself.

The ownership structure we require precludes us from applying for 501(c)3 nonprofit status; however, we are committed to a not-for-profit model and we will reinvest 100% of our earnings in the community once we are able to sustain our labor at the equivalent of a livable wage.
