It's time to register for The Big Silence Retreat- January 20th-23rd, 2019!! We are filling up fast and space is limited!! There are $400 scholarships available from WNCCUMC Leadership Development for Clergy and Ministry Professionals. We also have several $250 district scholarships available for UM Clergy.

Here's what participants have shared about their experience:

"I participated in the Big Silence the January before getting serious about my ordination and full connection paperwork. I wanted to retreat in order for God to rekindle the Holy Spirit's fire within my soul - and this experience did just that! I carry the practices of silence, solitude, and deep prayer with me each day of my ministry. Since that retreat, I was approved for full connection and ordained. Retreating is helpful for avoiding clergy burnout, but building a solid foundation for spiritual growth at the start is essential for long-term ministry.”

Jared Stine, High Point, NC

"In a world where we are bombarded with sounds and text and demands, it is a challenge to find time to listen for God in the quiet. I found The Big Silence experience offered me a beautiful and peaceful space for opening myself to God’s presence, resting in Christ’s love, and tuning in to the Holy Spirit’s guidance for the days to come."

Jenny Stewart, Boonville, NC

“The Big Silence Retreat provided the time and space for God to establish in me a rhythm. Participating in this retreat allowed God to set his pace for my life this year, posturing me to move forward from a place of quietness and settledness. As the year has unfolded, and the currents of ministry have tempted to exhaust and discourage me, God has continually taken my heart, mind, and spirit back to The Big Silence, allowing me to reset the pace by encompassing the chaos in silence, solitude and prayer.”

Stephanie Nance, Bristow, VA

“The rhythm and flow of the four days calmed my soul and allowed me to truly rest, worship, and listen for God's voice more deeply. We clergy often talk about silence but so seldom have the opportunity to actually practice it. My experience with The Big Silence made me hunger for more silence in my life, so I am now attending the School of the Spirit, which has also been a great blessing.”

Alice Kunka, Greensboro, NC

Journey Inward . . . The Big Silence Retreat- January 15-18th
Facilitated by Revs. Jonathan Brake & Dianne Lawhorn

We are all on a spiritual journey in this life, but so much of our journey is spent outside of ourselves. How often do you get away from the distractions of this world to find a holy place within? When was the last time you just hung out with God with no expectations whatsoever? Maybe it’s time for you to journey inward at The Big Silence Retreat. Start the New Year with a different kind of experience. Our main building and hermitages are full, but we still have a few rooms in nearby cottages that are available. There are also several District and Leadership Development Scholarships for Clergy and Ministry Professionals available. Contact Jonathan Brake at [email protected] for more information.

To register online, please visit our webpage at:
Hello Friends, The Big Silence is almost full! We only have a few spaces left. We still have scholarships that are being offered to UM Clergy and Lay Ministry Professionals from the WNCC Leadership Development Team. There are also scholarships for UM Clergy serving in Uwharrie, Northern Pedmont, & Metro Districts. If you are interested in attending The Big Silence or would like to inquire about scholarships, please contact Jonathan Brake at [email protected].

What other participants have shared about their experience:

“Oh my, if you can make this happen, GO FOR IT. I was able to attend this retreat a couple years ago, and it was transformational. Setting aside that time to be silent with and before God was so rich. It has continued to bear fruit and provide direction in my life even now. It will be well worth your time and investment!”
Rev. Roxanne Morgan, Charlotte, NC

“In a world where we are bombarded with sounds and text and demands, it is a challenge to find time to listen for God in the quiet. I found The Big Silence experience offered me a beautiful and peaceful space for opening myself to God’s presence, resting in Christ’s love, and tuning in to the Holy Spirit’s guidance for the days to come."
Rev. Jenny Stewart, Boonville, NC

“By the end of the retreat I knew that things would be different when I reentered my busy life. After spending days in silence, it doesn't seem so difficult now to sit quietly for 20 minutes and empty my chattering mind. Even when the noise keeps going, just the awareness and intention to listen for God is a powerful change. The Big Silence was really an invitation to all participants to make a commitment to a more nuanced way of living and experiencing God's presence.”
Martha Bassett, Winston-Salem, NC

"I participated in the Big Silence the January before getting serious about my ordination and full connection paperwork. I wanted to retreat in order for God to rekindle the Holy Spirit's fire within my soul - and this experience did just that! I carry the practices of silence, solitude, and deep prayer with me each day of my ministry. Since that retreat, I was approved for full connection and ordained in June of 2016. Retreating is helpful for avoiding clergy burnout, but building a solid foundation for spiritual growth at the start is essential for long-term ministry.”
Rev. Jared Stine, High Point, NC

“I participated in this retreat in 2015. I highly recommend it if you are seeking to practice or to learn more about silence. The leaders are gifted at journeying with you. The location is beautiful and provides a space for quiet reflection.”
Rev. Lisa McGehee, Henrico, VA
Hello Friends, it's time to register for The Big Silence Retreat, a 4-Day mostly silent retreat offering an immersion in solitude, silence, and deep prayer at the beautiful St. Francis Springs Prayer Center from Sunday afternoon to Wednesday afternoon, January 14-17, 2018. 2021 WDP WORSHIP SERVICE

Every year the first Friday of March is #WorldDayofPrayer. Dating back to 1861, Christian women of the United States and Canada collaborated in missional outreach specifically for women and children.

In 1887, Methodist women observed a week dedicated to prayer for foreign missions, and by 1897 women from 6 different denominations were active in a united day of prayer. In 1912, the Women’s Board of Foreign Missions called for a united day of prayer for foreign missions, what is now World Day of Prayer.
