Sunday, May 24 2020 - St. John's Episcopal Church - When I began this little project the trees were bare of leaves and the daffodils and tulips were in full bloom. The Covid Pandemic had turned our world upside down. Since then we have lost nearly 100,000 of our fellow Americans to this virus. Our daily lives have changed so dramatically but there is still beauty and joy on the grounds of our church. Life goes on and the trees and flowers still bring us their shelter, shade and beauty. Enjoy!
Sunday, May 17, 2020 - Good morning fellow Episcopalians! Beautiful day here. The grounds at St. John's are changing with the season. Spring is on it's way out, taking the tulips, daffodils, Iris's and Lillie's of the Valley. The Rhododendrons are in full glory and the Peonies are gorgeous. And we had a visitor on the roof. A squirrel and he did not like the camera flash.
May 10, 2020 Sunday and Mother's Day - It was a beautiful day at 290 Old Haw Creek Road. We missed everyone. Enjoy the photos. Hoping that we can worship together again soon.
Sunday, May 3, 2020 - As I was walking through the garden with my camera on Sunday, I was struck by the hidden beauty and joy that I was finding in the flowers and the beautiful spring day. On a "normal Sunday" I would simply have walked into the Sanctuary without a clue about what was missing from my morning. Please take a moment in these trying times; to appreciate the beauty and joy that surrounds us through the grace of God. Appreciate the beauty, joy and love of our friends, families and the many beauties of nature.
Sunday April 26, 2020: Beautiful day at St. John's. The Lilac's and Iris's were in full glory. And the Thistle and Dandelion's decided they had to preen for their admiring fans. OK, fans may be to strong a word but they were beautiful! Enjoy and please continue to take care of yourself. We love you and miss you.
4-19-20: The State of North Carolina continued the "Stay at Home Order. Please stay safe and enjoy this bit of beauty and joy. Sunday April 19 was a somber overcast day but someone forgot to tell the flowers. The tulips and daffodils have cast aside their blossoms and are already preparing for your viewing pleasure next spring. The Lilac's, Iris's and Dogwoods were in their full glory. And the Rose's are waiting their turn on the stage. Enjoy!
April 12 - The tulips are beginning to fade but the Iris's, dogwoods and Azelea's are waiting in the wings to continue the spring flower show. Stay safe everyone! We love you and miss you.
April 5, 2020 - As a member of "The Sunday Crew" I am witness each week to the changing flower show. It reminds me that beauty, love and life are fleeting and must be celebrated when we are in their presence. The flowers demand nothing except that we pause and admire their beauty.
The "Sunday Team" misses each and everyone of our congregation. This emergency will pass we will once again gather to share the Eucharist, hug each other during Peace and gather at Coffee Hour for conversation and food. Until that time, continue to care for yourself and others. I will post some pictures each week from St. John's as a reminder of the life, love and beauty of our church. These photos were taken March 29.

At St. John’s Episcopal Church, Asheville, we gather to practice the generous Gospel of Jesus Christ. We are a vibrant community celebrating the faith we share.

Corrymeela Community - Corrymeela

A prayer for Holy Saturday:

God of grieving,
God of silence,
there is a strange gift
in having time,
one whole day this holy week,
to sit with questions of why
and how long
and to hear no response at all.
To rush from Friday to Sunday,
from death to resurrection,
wouldn’t do either justice.
Nor would it dignify the life of those
whose daily pain and grief
and constant pleas for justice
go unanswered
in the world’s daily rhythm.
Let your silence fill this silence,
until our empty noise dies out.
Amen.

Presiding Bishop Michael B. Curry

A Statement from Presiding Bishop Michael B. Curry and The Episcopal Church:

Wherever and whenever hatred or bigotry rises up and is directed at any child of God, we who follow Jesus of Nazareth and therefore stand for love, must act. We must stand up, speak up and show up. Today we do so with and for our Asian American and Pacific Islander brothers, sisters and siblings. Whatever the motivation of the shooter in Atlanta, we know that we are seeing a dangerous increase in hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders: in the past year, Stop AAPI Hate has documented 3,795 incidents. Many of our fellow children of God are living in fear here in the United States, where there is supposed to be liberty and justice for all. We who stand for love must act — we must speak up, stand up and show up. Here are some links to some ways we can do that:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

When I was a kid I dreamed of one day going to Washington, D.C. And, in High School, I was honored to be selected as a Student Ambassador and spend time meeting and learning from leaders in our nation's capitol about democracy and how our government worked.

I was honored to meet with ambassadors, members of Congress, White House staff and Cabinet secretaries. I had the opportunity to go to places that the average tourist was unable to go, and to hear the amazing stories of people who were so dedicated to serving the nation.

I left Washington D.C. determined to return one day. That opportunity came in 1994 when I was hired by the U.S. Department of Justice. It was one of the proudest days of my life. I was honored to work alongside some amazing people, who like me, simply wanted to serve their nation. And, while there were differences of approaches and thought, our common commitment was to do the best we could to serve this country. Those were some of the best years of my professional life, and some of those colleagues are still dear friends today.

I write this letter with a heavy heart. And its purpose is not to make a partisan attack, but to simply say, we are a people dependent on one another. We are people who believe in dreams, and the right to express our views, pursue our passions and dreams and contribute to the greater good of our communities and nation.

The dreams I had as a kid are the same dreams I have today. To be a part of something greater than myself. To offer the skills and passions I have to foster love and care of neighbor and to serve in ways which advance the dreams of all.

My brothers and sisters, first and foremost, pray. Pray for our nation, for our leaders, for justice, for mercy and for peace.

Then, act. Find ways to continue to foster communities where people are free to dream; free to express their views and find ways to create safe space to tackle the difficult conversations that need to occur in order to promote mercy, justice and peace. To create beloved community.

Oh God, you made us in your own image and redeemed us through Jesus your son. Look now with compassion on the entire human family; and particularly this part of the family, in the United States, and those in our nation's capital; take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts; break down the walls that separate us; unite us in bonds of love; and work through our struggle and confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth; that, in your good time, all nations and races may serve you in harmony around your heavenly throne; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Faithfully,

[12/13/20]   Covid-19 is hitting close to everyone's home. Especially here in N.C.
With a heavy heart but strong faith in my Heavenly Father, today I kneel in prayer asking for full recovery for those suffering with Covid-19. Lord I ask You to protect & cover us with your healing hands. Please protect and strengthen the elderly, homeless, the unemployed, sick, frontliners and caregivers who are exhausted... but not giving up. In Jesus’ name I ask it, AMEN!

My request is that you consider placing this prayer on your timeline/status, for at least one day. Let us be united in praying for one another. Let us be the Church.
