[04/08/21]   LOUDOUN RECOGNIZED NATIONALLY FOR MUSIC EDUCATION

Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) has again been named as one of the 2021 Best Communities for Music Education by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. Only 20 school districts in the Commonwealth of Virginia were recipients of this award.

Now in its 21st year, the awards program recognizes outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders who have made music education part of a well-rounded education. Designations are made to districts and schools that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and access to music education. These districts and schools set the bar in offering all students access to comprehensive music education.

Research into music education continues to demonstrate educational/cognitive and social skill benefits for children who make music. In a series of landmark studies by scientists and researchers at Northwestern University a link was found between students in community music programs and life-long academic success, including higher high school graduation rates and college attendance. In another study from the University, it was discovered that the benefits of early exposure to music education improves how the brain processes and assimilates sounds, a trait that lasts well into adulthood.

Thank you for your recognition of music teachers!

Three cheers for music teachers! 🎵🎶
Sing-alongs, early exposure to musical instruments, and opportunities for all students to perform in front of family and friends - your work is so important! #ThankYouThursday

Proud of you, Rick Reaves!

Rick Reaves has adjusted his flourishing band program to distance learning 46 years into his teaching career.

The Loudoun Valley High School band director is teaching online for the first time since he began teaching music as a junior in college. Reaves said the love of his students has spurred him to adopt the new methods of teaching in a compressed time frame.

Reaves sees arts education as being particularly needed by students now. “The arts are a very important part of the development of the mind as well as the spirit. The arts teach the whole student. It is one area that ties both sides of the brain together. Musicians have stronger ties between the parts of the brain than others.”

Keeping the ties to his students online is a skill Reaves has mastered. He teaches classes of from 13 to 30 students based on a set, yet flexible, schedule.
