John's life changed in just seconds as he lit his gas grill to cook a couple of steaks. 🍖

What he didn't know was that his wife had tried to light 🔥 the grill 30 minutes earlier, and she had left the valve of the propane tank wide open, with all of the grill's burners set on high without actually lighting it. 😳

The wind had been blowing, so neither of them had smelled the gas.💨

When John hit the switch to light the grill, the gas that had accumulated exploded into a ball of fire. 💥

And John endured second- and third-degree burns over 20 percent of his body.😰

According to the National Fire Protection Association, there are roughly 8900 grilling incidents a year in the U.S., resulting in an average $118 million in damage.

How can you reduce your risks?

▶️ Stop oiling your food with greasy marinades.
▶️ Keep a "Class K" fire extinguisher near your grilling station.
▶️ Keep combustible materials at least 10 feet away from your grill.
▶️ Designate one grillmaster for the meal to interact with the grill.
▶️ Go out to dinner instead. 😉

Here's to a safe Labor Day weekend!

The red car was at a complete stop behind a bus that was stopped at a train crossing.

The blue Jeep was texting and driving.

Shockingly, the driver of the red car is okay,

Luckily, he was alone because a passenger likely would not have survived.

Please don’t text and drive.

This is a good reminder for all of us.

Here's a common question.❓

"If someone hits my vehicle while it is parked, what can I do to protect myself?" 🚗

Hopefully, the person responsible left a note... but a NOT a note like one. (frown)

Or there are security cameras 🎥 or witnesses 👀 of the incident.

But if you can't locate the person who caused the damage, it's your auto policy's collision coverage, which will likely cover the loss.

A deductible would apply here.

Collision coverage IS optional if you don't have a loan on your vehicle.

Without this coverage, you would most likely have to pay for repairs out of pocket.

Are you wondering what coverage and limits you are carrying on your auto policy?

Let's take a few minutes and review it together.

😳 Blowouts can be serious, causing about 75,000 accidents each year and killing over 400 drivers.

If you happen to hear that dreaded BOOM sound...💥

⬛️ Steer straight. Your car may be fishtailing. Get a firm grip on the steering wheel and try to keep your vehicle moving straight without hitting the brakes.

⬛️ Gently press the gas. Accelerating just a bit can help you regain control and maintain your forward momentum. Ease off the pedal once your vehicle has stabilized.

⬛️ Once your speed falls below 20 mph, use your brakes and steering wheel to pull off the road.

Having an understanding of these tips can increase your chances of safely stopping your vehicle in the event of a blowout.

🚗 As your teenager gets their driver's license, that's when they must be added to your auto insurance policy.

It's no secret that insurance rates are higher for teens.

That's because statistically, they do have more accidents.

So how can you insure your teen driver to get the coverage they need without breaking the bank?

🔵 Consider increasing your deductibles.
🔵 See if your teen's grades qualify for a Good Student Discount.
🔵 Consider letting them drive a used vehicle instead of a brand new one.
🔵 Be a good example of a safe driver.
🔵 Somehow, convince them that the legal driving age has been increased to 25. (grin)

As they say, safety is a cheap and effective insurance policy, but of course, it can’t be the only one.

If you want to talk about insuring your teen or anything else, we will be standing by.

When it comes to insuring a vehicle, you have to legally own it in order to insure it.

If you have a child who has acquired a vehicle and the title is in their name only, it cannot be covered by your auto policy.

What can you do to ensure that a vehicle in this situation has coverage?

🔵 Make sure you are added as a co-owner of the vehicle's title.
🔵 Have us assist your child with starting their own auto policy.

Is this something we need to talk about?

It’s important to us that you have the coverage you expect in the event of a claim.

If you have college-bound students heading off to school in the fall, it's important to review insurance coverage before they go.

Here are some things to know:

✅ Students residing in a dorm are typically covered under their parent's homeowners insurance policies.

✅ Students who live off campus are usually not covered by their parents’ homeowners policy.

✅ In either case, consider a stand-alone property policy with a low deductible, especially if your existing property policy has a higher deductible.

✅ 50 percent of on-campus crimes involve burglaries. While it may be necessary to take sports equipment and computers to school, other expensive items such as valuable jewelry or expensive electronics should be left behind or locked up. These items can also be subject to coverage limits under a standard homeowners policy, so if they must be brought to campus, consider adding a floater or endorsement to the homeowners policy to cover them.

✅ Create a “dorm inventory.”. Make a detailed inventory of the items they are taking with them, and revise it each year. Having an up-to-date inventory list will help get insurance claims settled faster.

Since every situation varies, it is a good idea for us to talk so that we can best advise you.

Summer is the peak season for home burglaries.

The initial step in home crime prevention is to reduce or eliminate opportunities.

With that in mind, here are six ways that you can reduce the chances that you’ll be a victim of home theft:

Check windows and doors.

Make sure doors are locked before leaving home.

Install motion detecting lights. A burglar’s best friend is the dark. Motion-detecting lights can help deter burglars.

Install a home alarm system. Make sure to activate it every time you leave.

Don’t announce online that you are going on vacation. Some thieves do use social media to find out who is away from home.

Store ladders, tools and any other outside objects that can be used to assist in home entry in a locked shed or garage.

Stop deliveries. A pile of newspapers or mail overflowing from your mailbox can indicate that you are not there.

An empty home is typically going to be more vulnerable to theft, but it is more preventable if you take the right precautions.

While mature trees are beautiful, they can also become a BIG liability.

That's why avoiding species of trees with invasive root systems can save you a ton of grief.

For example:

🌳 Oak roots can potentially stretch 100 feet, embedding roots under sidewalks while forging through foundations.

🌳 Willow tree roots will instinctively reach for water sources, such as septic tanks and plumbing pipes.

🌳 Magnolia roots can grow along the surface of the ground, creating lawn deformities.

🌳 Birch tree roots are known for blocking drains and water pipes.

🌳 Poplar root systems are typically aggressive and can result in problems up to 450 feet away from their trunk.

Which trees are known to be less of a threat to plumbing and irrigation systems?

Consider Crabapple, Maple, Dogwood, Crane Myrtle, or Thornless Honey Locust.

These trees still produce abundant shade and beauty without the headaches.

Before planting, talk to an arborist to confirm which trees are the very best for your area.
