The 31st edition of the Annual Van Metre 5K for Children's National was a huge success, raising $266,000 for the cause! Over 400 runners and walkers strapped on their shoes and hit the streets of Ashburn to support our event!

Learn what Coach Janet (an avid runner) from recommends for mixing up your running routine!
When training to run, you’ll want to avoid getting injuries. I find that the best way to combat overuse injuries when running is to incorporate strength training into your training program. Running involves a lot of full-body and single-directional movements. You’ll want to strengthen muscles that aren’t being used as often, such as your lateral quad muscles, or even upper body muscles to avoid injury.
Here are a few examples of exercises you could do at home to help: Burpees, supermans, lateral lunges w/a weight or w/a hop. Remember, running involves the entire body so you should look to strengthen your body as a whole.

Hey Team! Starting to feel some soreness as you prepare for ? Don’t worry. We’ve got some great tips from Coach Katie on how you can ease that soreness and get back out there!
👉 Take a lacrosse ball, tennis ball or foam roller and put some tension into those muscles. You will know you found the spot when you feel a slight release in the muscles as you’re rolling about, but making sure we are breathing and not in any pain!

🏃♀️ Tips for Building Your Running Base
📣 It's important to start slow and gradually increase your pace and distance over time. Don't try to run too much, too soon, as this can lead to injuries and burnout. Start by building a base by running regularly for a few weeks. Gradually increase your running distance and time each week to build your endurance.
👉 Once you have a base, create a training plan that includes running 3-4 times a week, with a mix of easy runs, interval runs, and long runs. Set realistic goals that are achievable, such as running for 20 minutes without stopping or completing a 5K race. This will help keep you motivated and on track.

Hi Team! It’s time to start preparing for the Van Metre 5K, and and are proud to be the Official Training Partner again this year! We’ll be sharing tips each week to help you prepare for this amazing event.
Here are some tips from Coach on picking the right running shoes!
👉 When choosing a running shoe, the first thing to figure out is if you need a neutral or stability shoe; does your foot overpronate or not?
👟 The best way to find out the correct shoe for you would be to go see a fit specialist at a specialty running store, like . Knowing the correct type of running shoe for you is key to your running experience. If you have the wrong shoe, you could get injured, or not even enjoy your runs. Once you figure out if you need a neutral or stability shoe, then you can figure out if you want more cushion or a firmer-feeling shoe. I personally like a firmer feel of the ground when I run, and I have a neutral foot so I run in a neutral shoe. I train in the NB Supercomp pacer as well as the Altra Escalate Racer.
🏃♂️ Your shoes are your only equipment, make sure you take the time to get the proper equipment for your sport.
