On June 6, 1944, Supreme Allied Commander General Dwight D. Eisenhower gives the go-ahead for the largest amphibious military operation in history: Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of northern France, commonly known as D-Day.

By daybreak, 18,000 British and American parachutists were already on the ground. An additional 13,000 aircraft were mobilized to provide air cover and support for the invasion. At 6:30 a.m., American troops came ashore at Utah and Omaha beaches.

The British and Canadians overcame light opposition to capture Gold, Juno and Sword beaches; so did the Americans at Utah. The task was much tougher at Omaha beach, however, where the U.S. First Division battled high seas, mist, mines, burning vehicles—and German coastal batteries, including an elite infantry division, which spewed heavy fire. Many wounded Americans ultimately drowned in the high tide. British divisions, which landed at Gold, Juno, and Sword beaches, and Canadian troops also met with heavy German fire.

But by day’s end, 155,000 Allied troops–Americans, British and Canadians–had successfully stormed Normandy’s beaches and were then able to push inland. Within three months, the northern part of France would be freed and the invasion force would be preparing to enter Germany, where they would meet up with Soviet forces moving in from the east.

"Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude. America will never forget their sacrifices. Because of these sacrifices, the dawn of justice and freedom throughout the world slowly casts its gleam across the horizon."
~President Harry Truman

Boston needs 78, Miami needs 9, Houston needs 47 come on desert storm veterans we need you all to get involved! The consortium is not VA! It is funded through our efforts yearly to get funding for excellent independent medical universities! These are Dr Klimas, Dr Sullivan and Dr Lea Steele who have fought for us since we came home..they are leaders determined to get us answers and real help! Call Joy at 1-617-358-1717 to get prescreened and then they get you connected to one of three centers!
Our highest priority now is the Consortium Study! It is at three sites Boston (Dr Kimberly Sullivan) needs 86 more, Houston ( Dr Lea Steele)needs 55 , Miami Davie Florida (Dr. Klimas) needs 10. You must call Joy at 617-358-1717 to be prescreened a telephone interview questions then tell her which location! This has to get done re the recruitment now as soon as possible because the sooner we get all sites full and participation done the faster we get results published This is important ! Now it is a one visit approximately 6 hrs. And after that other visits will be scheduled. THISis for desert storm veterans deployed in theater! I have done this study in Boston and it is well worth it! These three researcher doctors have been with us since we came home and just needed our CDMRP funding for independent medical researchers, medical universities, and medical research institutes ! These are the three that mean it we will get answers what is wrong in body and find a real treatment if not a cure! If you have questions you can call me too at 303-726-0738.

Coast Guard Birthday

Happy Birthday, U.S. Coast Guard 🥳

https://www.military.com/coast-guard-birthday

Coast Guard Birthday The Coast Guard is one of America's five armed forces and traces its founding to Aug. 4, 1790, when the first Congress authorized the construction of 10 vessels to enforce tariff and trade laws, prevent smuggling, and protect the collection of federal revenue.

[07/03/21]   Happy Independence Day 😎 Did you know? John Adams believed that July 2nd was the correct date on which to celebrate the birth of American independence, and would reportedly turn down invitations to appear at July 4th events in protest. 😄🕺🎂🗽🎆🎉🇺🇸

How is Veterans Day different from Memorial Day? Veterans Day should be festive and celebratory; honoring those who served. Memorial Day should be somber; honoring those who gave their lives in the line of duty.

Our Story

The Leonard W. Kidd Memorial American Legion Post 2001, founded in 2000, was named in honor of the only Ashburn, Virginia resident killed during the Vietnam War. Our post assists veterans in need with financial emergency funds through the Legion's Family Support Network.; providing aid to service personnel and families who were and are directly affected by Operations Desert Shield & Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom/Enduring Freedom in America's Global War on Terrorism. We support our returning wounded veterans through financial contributions to the Walter Reed National Medical Center & are especially proud to be an annual donor of the Boulder Crest Retreat for Military and Veteran Wellness located in Bluemont, Virginia within Loudoun County.

In addition, our American Legion Post also actively supports the Legion's Boys State and Girl's State programs and American Legion Baseball originally initiated by the Legion in 1925. Post 2001 began sponsoring the Ashburn Knights baseball team in 2011.

History of the American Legion

The American Legion was formed by veterans of the American Expeditionary Force in Paris, France in March 1919 shortly after World War I ended. In May of that same year, the Legion's St. Louis Caucus formally founded the American Legion, and on 16 September 1919, the American Legion was chartered by the United States Congress. Americanism is our business!

Today, over 14,000 Legion posts represent 2.4 million members in the U.S. & worldwide, including Puerto Rico, Mexico, the Philippines and France. For nearly 100 years, the Legion has influenced considerable social change in America, secured hundreds of benefits for veterans and produced many important programs for America's youth and children.
