Throughout May, we're showcasing the impact of our Innovation in Education grants, like the one awarded to Loudoun County Public Schools' Rolling Ridge Elementary.
Librarian Lori Redman used her $1k grant to purchase 20 Playaway audiobooks that read stories to students who are struggling to keep up with their grade level. She shared her observations and feedback from the students:
"In the past, these students would often leave the library with bigger chapter books simply because it was what their peers were doing, even if they were unable to read the book themselves.
"It has been WONDERFUL to see the kids get so excited about these audiobooks! They come back to the library raving about the story they heard and how they want to hear more. It is wonderful to see their love of literature and reading. And if these kids do not have parents who are able to read to them at home, then the Playaways also give them the pleasure of having a story read aloud to them. They have been a game-changer, and truly motivating for all the kiddos."
