OOS! :)
We're the area’s premier traditional Japanese martial arts school, teaching children and adults ho

Replaced/upgraded all our toilets this weekend! Not exactly the most glamorous thing to celebrate, but definitely necessary when the ones we had stopped working properly and were very pricey to fix!
Big thank you to Mr. Scott Hawthorne, the Instructor-in-Charge of the Middletown, NY dojo and Koehler sales exec, for the recommendation!
Our dojo continues to get improvements as we get ready for our big tournament weekend November 5 & 6. Stay tuned for more details this week!
The dojo is closed for the Labor Day Holiday. Wishing everyone a great (unofficial) end to Summer!

We have a long overdue congratulations to Hiroki for achieving his Junior Black Belt earlier this summer!
Hiroki has been with us for 6 years, first starting in our Little Pandas program when he was 5. (You can even find a picture of him making that same smile on our website!). He has always displayed a fantastic attitude in every class with respect, focus, and strong spirit, while consistently trying his best. Hiroki has also demonstrated excellent patience, as the pandemic combined with his very busy schedule kept him from training as frequently as his peers.
We are so proud of you Hiroki! While achieving black belt is the end of one road, it is also the beginning of whole new one. We're looking forward to watching you continue to grow and mature as you walk along this path!

With the school year now in full swing, we wanted to thank all the families and their children that came to this year's Summer Camps! We had an amazing time over the four sessions, and we hope you did too.
We also wanted to give a big thank you to all our Assistant Instructors! They did so well with the campers.
See you at the dojo next time and have a wonderful new school year!

We take cleaning very seriously here at the dojo! 🧼🫧
Big thank you to Mr. Butler for washing the carpet these last two months. The dojo floors are looking fantastic!

Wishing all of our students and their families a wonderful and safe Independence Day Weekend!
Just as a reminder, the dojo will be closed Saturday through Monday. All classes resume on Tuesday.
See you then!

We had a great first week of Summer Camp! Special thanks to our Assistant Instructors Michael, Raina (not shown), and Govind!
We have three more weeks of camp left starting July 11, and all camps still have spots available! Register at: http://bit.ly/MartialArtsCampEnroll.

THANK YOU to everyone who took time out on your Sunday for our Spring Dojo Clean-up!! We know we didn't capture everyone in the selfie. Sorry!
The dojo looks (and smells) phenomenal! All the students will be enjoying your hardwork all summer long. Thank you again!

A belated and huge CONGRATULATIONS to Raina and Chuckie for achieving their black belts earlier this month!
They have both been training with us for a long time. It is well deserved!
It has been wonderful to watch them both grow into the young adults they’ve become while watching them grow and develop in the martial arts over the years. We’re all so happy for you!
Remember, there’s much more to learn. In many ways, black belt is only the beginning!

Congratulations to all our Little Pandas on their graduation yesterday! You all did outstandingly. We're very proud of you!
We hope to see you back May 5th for our second Spring Session. It'll be great!

What an excellent seminar with Master Ochiai this weekend! It was great to be back to “normal” for our annual black-belt only Master Class!
And, even though Sensei couldn’t make it, everyone else was able to take regular class on Friday night with Master Ochiai and the students in Vestal, NY!
Looking forward to heading back in May for Haru Matsuri!

Looking forward to Master Class this weekend with Osensei Hidy Ochiai!
In the meantime, here’s our group photo from the Nunchaku and Sai Arts Seminar from February. Better late than never!
And remember, the dojo will be closed on Saturday while we’re in New York at Master Class.

For women ages 13 and up!
SCHEDULE UPDATE: This Thursday will be our last online class. Starting next week on June 14, all classes will be in-person!
While we're very excited to moving even closer to getting back to "normal," we're sad to see these classes go! They were integral to our continued training during some of the worst and darkest times of the pandemic to date.
Thank you to everyone who took part in them, especially to those who have stayed with us till the end!
For all those who have yet to return to in-person classes, Sensei Winkler and Osensei Ochiai very much look forward to seeing you again once you're comfortable joining us!
The dojo is closed on Monday, May 31 in observance of Memorial Day. Have a safe and fun holiday weekend. See you on Tuesday!
COVID-19 Update:
We are reviewing the Governor's Office's and the Virginia Department of Health's newly released COVID guidelines in detail. We will have updated safety procedures and protocols in the first part of June.
Until then, we will keep our current procedures in place. Please stay patient with us as we work to find the best way to continue practicing safely at our school. We are all eager to return to "normal" martial arts training again, and this will be a big step closer.
Thank you to our students, families, and community for your continued support. We could not have made it this far without you!
Wishing everyone a great holiday weekend!

Our Weapons class returns next Friday, April 9! We'll begin training in Bo-jitsu.
The bo (staff or stick) is one of the five weapons systematized by early practitioners of karate. It is also a signature weapon of our karate style, Wa-shin Ryu!
Training with the bo improves balance, coordination, and upper body strength. It is a wonderful way to augment and supplement one's traditional karate practice!

Even though it's Spring Break, the dojo is still open for all classes!

Our basic posture during this critical situation.
COVID-19 UPDATE: Message from Sensei Winkler
We've been doing extensive research, examining guidance from the local and national health agencies and government recommendations for what is the best course of action for our school. While I very much want to continue to keep the school open, I have decided that it is in our students', their families', and our community's best interest if I suspend all classes and lessons starting today for next two weeks (March 16 - March 29).
The situation surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic is continuing to develop, and we will continue to monitor it very closely. As soon as it is safe for us to resume classes we will, even if that is sooner than March 29. However, the prevailing outlook at this time suggests that we will need to be closed until the 29th.
Also, our annual tournament, scheduled for Saturday, April 25, has been indefinitely postponed. Once we are able to confidently set a new date for it, we will let you know.
I will very much miss seeing you all. Master Ochiai has said this a time for Rinki Ohen ("adaptability") and Nin-Tai ("patience and perseverance"). So, please keep up with your training, as you’re able, during this challenging period.
I will keep you updated as this pandemic continues to evolve. If you have any questions or concerns about any of the above, please don't hesitate to contact me at 571-420-6758. Thank you in advance for your understanding.
I wish you and your family safety and good health, now and always!
As news regarding the Coronavirus threat (COVID-19) continues to evolve, we wanted to update our community on what we have been doing, and what we continue to do to preempt exposure within our school.
The safety and well-being of our students and their families is our top concern, and we continue to closely monitor this situation and align our response with guidance from local and national health agencies.
Before we go into specifics actions we have/are taking outlined below, we want you to know that the Dojo is open for all classes, and at this time there is no change to our class schedule. Should the need arise to adjust our class schedule and/or class format, including closure, we will contact you immediately.
Steps We are Taking
Disinfecting all commonly touched objects and areas with EPA-approved Coronavirus disinfectants during the day and after class every night.
Students will no longer use the iPad to sign-in for class, but will instead check in with the staff and/or Sensei Winkler at the front desk.
Students are asked to do the following: Wash hands for 20 seconds before and after class or use the provided hand sanitizer. Cover mouth and nose with a tissue or sleeve (not hands) when coughing or sneezing. Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth. If you are sick, please stay home and only return once you are symptom free for 24 hours.
We have plans in place, should the need arise, so that students can continue to train and develop themselves in an environment that is as safe as possible. These include limiting class size and focusing on the large array of katas and techniques, that require no person-to-person contact.
We will provide further updates as this situation continues to unfold. If you have any question or concerns please contact us anytime at 571-420-6758.

Congratulations to our Little Pandas on their Graduation last week! It was a wonderful session, and everyone did really well.
We're looking forward to the start of our Practice (Renshu) Session, which begins on Monday. We hope to see you all back in class then!

We had an excellent start to the New Year last weekend at HQ for Hatsu Geiko with Master Hidy Ochiai!
It was followed up by a wonderful visit these last two days with Master Ochiai here in VA. Unfortunately, we didn’t get any pictures this visit, but it was great to see so many of the students at the Dojo! Looking forward to the next visit in February!
The Dojo is closed today and all classes are canceled.
With the steady snow, that's set to continue through class, we're very concerned about safety not only on the roads but also in our parking lot, which was not pre-treated by our property owner/management.
Sensei Winkler looks forward to seeing everyone in class tomorrow. Stay safe and warm!

We had an excellent Self-Defense Class this past weekend! A big thank you to Shirley's Wellness - Holistic Health Coach for hosting and to Kelly's Bootcamp & Inergy for providing us such a great place to have the class!
You all did very well, and we hope to see you at the next one!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN! The Dojo only has one class today from 4:30 - 5:15pm.
To all of our trick-or-treaters, have a great time and remember to always be aware of your surroundings and avoid any potentially dangerous situation!

This is an overdue CONGRATULATIONS to Ragya for achieving his Junior Black Belt back in August!!!
Ragya has been a stellar student over the years, consistently demonstrating the spirit of hard-work, discipline, respect, humility, positivity, and kindness combined with strong technical skill that are indicative of a black belt. We are very proud to have you among our black belt ranks.
Earlier this month, Ragya also won three individual gold medals at our 53rd Annual Tournament in New York! Congratulations again and keep up the good work!

Congratulations to all of our Little Pandas on their Graduation last week! It took a few (maybe a lot) of takes, but we finally got a picture or two we could share :).
It was a wonderful session, and we can't wait for the next one to start on November 11. See you then!

Little Pandas Karate Graduation Fall 2019

We had a great time at the Reception for Master Ochiai’s 80th Birthday! So glad so many of our Dojo’s families could make it.
We’re looking forward to tomorrow morning’s tournament. Wishing all of our competitors a good night’s sleep and good luck!

Now that it's Fall, we've finally gotten to adding our photos from our Summer Camps.
This year, each of the four camps was amazing! Everyone had a great time, including all of our instructors, and the addition of swimming with our neighbor Goldfish Swim School - Ashburn was a huge hit among all the campers!
Thank you to all of our campers and their families, to our Assistant Instructor Mrs. Suzuki and our Junior Asssitant Instructors, and to Goldfish Swim School - Ashburn for partnering with us!
We're looking forward to an even better Summer next year. In the meantime, we wish you all a great Fall!

Summer Camp 2019

We have a big congratulations in order: Back in November, Mr. Frias and his two sons achieved their black belt, and now the mother, Mrs. Suzuki, has joined them!
Over the years, the Frias family has been extremely dedicated to our Dojo and to Wa-shin Ryu, always helping out around the school and traveling to our HQ in New York whenever possible to attend special seminars.
You all have demonstrated time and again that our school is truly for the whole family. We are so proud of your achievement! Keep going and don't forget "life is short, art is long."
We look forward to continuing to see all of you on the training floor!

We are closed today for Independence Day. Wishing you all a great holiday!
The Dojo will reopen for all classes on Friday, July 5th. See you then!

Last week was a busy one at the Dojo with Summer Camp, and it was capped off by a trip to Hidy Ochiai Karate in New York on Saturday for a special seminar on Jufu no Kata (Gentle Karate) by Master Ochiai!
While most are familiar with what comprises the conventional practice of traditional karate, not many know about the breathing exercises (Ko-kyu Ho), gentle forms and techniques, and the moving meditation that are also a part of traditional martial art, which fall under the practice of Jufu.
Jufu is an integral part of our style (Wa-shin Ryu), and we took a lot of information back home to share with all of our students!
Thank you to Master Hidy Ochiai for such a wonderful seminar. We look forward to seeing you at the end of July for the Mid-Summer Training!

We had an excellent first week of Summer Camp! While we were able to take one serious photo with the campers, we were having a lot of fun in between as you can see!
Special thank you to Goldfish Swim School - Ashburn for having our campers. They loved swimming with you!
And thank you to our Assistant Mrs. Suzuki (not shown) and Junior Assistants Michael (shown in the back) and Baron (not shown). You are an important part of what makes camp so special!
We still have 3 more camps coming up with spots available in each. The first is happening July 8-12. To enroll go to http://bit.ly/MartialArtsCampEnroll.
See you there!

Congratulations to our Little Pandas on their Graduation! You all did very well, and you should be proud!
Little Pandas is now on its Summer Break, but it will return in mid-September. We will miss seeing you!
In the meantime, we still have room in our Summer Camps! For more information, including how to enroll, please go here: http://bit.ly/MartialArtsCamp.
