Comments

Oakridge Auction Gallery is different from the majority of art galleries that I have visited. First, it has the inside design of a home in the valley, classic design without bragging about it. They have an excellent staff, who have the ability to give a potential participant in the auction a reason to buy. In other words, they know what they are talking about and most important they can tell the original from the copy. Soft spoken and always willing to please. Give them five stars and get your check book and credit cards. Also, suggest taking a look at some of the stuff that comes up in November.

Bringing together buyers and sellers of rare and valuable works of art, antiques, jewelry, and colle Valuable fine art, jewelry, antiques, and collectable auctions and consignments.

Oakridge is pleased to offer two early works by Caroline Young, a Chinese-American artist taking a unique thematic approach to the traditional Gongbi style of painting.

Young paints on swathes of Japanese silk, producing arresting panels steeped in rich color palettes. They display scenes of nature and its forces with a surprising depth in contrast to the delicacy of the canvas, creating ”images [that] seem to glow with a soft, rich, purity of color.”

A deeper look at a recent auction highlight!

This early 19th century embroidered yellow “Golden Dragon” robe featuring the forbidden stitch recently sold for $6,250. What is the forbidden stitch?

Now called the Peking stitch, the forbidden stitch is an intricate circular stitch commonly found on textiles from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).

Though its exact origin is unknown, legend is that embroiderers with mastery of the stitch went blind and so the stitch was forbidden by the government. More likely, the name of the stitch derives from the “Forbidden City,” the imperial palace where the emperors female servants were highly skilled stitchers.

Happy World Calligraphy Day! Throughout centuries, calligraphy has been one of the highest forms of art in Chinese society, valued above other visual arts such as painting. The gestural nature of composing characters and the structural variability allowed by the fluidity of traditional ink and brush result in a highly unique and personal script, often seen as telling as the words themselves.

Seen here are scrolls by Zhang Daqian (1899-1983), a perfect example of fusing calligraphy with painting, bearing poetry as well.

Stay tuned for more beautiful calligraphic rolls in our Fine Asian Arts sale next month!

1. “Landscape Painting” by Zhang Daqian give to Qiqei, sold for $550,000 in March 2018
2. “Painting of a Scholar with Bamboo” by Zhang Daqian, sold for $106,250 in September 2017
