W&OD Trail

Comments

In the spirit of sharing the trail, can we please talk about sharing with horses? Please remember if you fly up on a bike behind a horse without announcing yourself, you could spook a horse causing the horse to bolt or jump which could cause injury to the rider or the biker trying to pass. This is a 1000 pound animal with a mind of its own and it has nothing to do with the experience of the rider. Horses are prey animals and they are hard-wired to survive above all else if they mistake something as a predator.
Please be courteous and slow down and announce yourself if you come up behind a horse on the trail. Also please slow down on blind curves and hills which could bring you upon a horse quickly.
Thank you!
I see a lot of overgrowth being cut alongside the trail in Loudoun, is this related to the trail?

I am the ride manager for the Lymphoma Research Foundation's Bike Ride on October 2nd that starts and ends at the Barnesville school. This is our 16th year putting on this ride and it has been hugely successful- the money raised for this blood cancer, of which someone new is diagnosed with every five minutes, funds research for improved treatments, educating physicians and offering special patient services . We are still looking for a few more bike marshals and I was hoping that some of you might be interested in volunteering. We usually assign bike marshals a 10 mile segment that they share with other marshals and go back and forth.
We are also looking for medical personnel to be available, bike mechanics, and traffic monitors to direct bikers. We'd greatly appreciate your help. You can email me at [email protected] or the sign up form https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050D48A5AB23A4FA7-maryland and the website about the ride is www.lymphoma.org/researchride
Big thanks to more than a dozen W&OD riders who asked and offered help, food and water when I broke a spoke West of Leesburg.

Your kindness is appreciated many of these words from express and yes I got home safely.
Hi, are there any organized group bike rides or bike clubs that ride this trail regularly? I live in Maryland and would prefer to ride with a group. I ride a Trek FX with a pace of 8 to 10 mph. Thanks.
Are you able to provide a list of open water fountains on the W&OD Trail?
Are e-bike allowed at WO&D trail (Leesburg, VA)? Thanks
I had a scooter battery fall out of my backpack somewhere between DC and Reston last night on my way home from work. If anyone finds it please comment.

Thanks
Cole
Can someone tell me if I get on the trail in Vienna going towards Leesburg is it flat and if so for how long? Looking for flat paved trails as I am an older woman that can't do hills but can do distance. Thank you for your time.
A reminder for Washington and Old Dominion Trail users: From April 11 – April 15, 2022, parts of the W&OD Trail in will be temporarily closed and detoured between Claiborne Parkway to just west of Cochran Mill Road while Dominion Energy works on transmission lines.

The work could extend into the next week. Details from NOVA Parks here: https://bit.ly/3JnUD7q
Purcellville daffodil.
Just posted Saturday morning in RBC Members Only: If you are riding the WOD today be careful on the sharp turns on the underpass below route 7 near Leesburg. There is a lot of fine sand there and I went down this morning. Scraped knees and side of face but bike is okay😉
Did anyone loss a single Airpod on the trail?

If so reach out
What to speak up about a new trail in Loudoun? Check this out.

When they say "the W&OD is for everyone", that DOES have its limitations! 🤣

45 miles of paved trail, in Northern Virginia, for walking, running, bicycling and skating and 32 miles of adjacent gravel trail for horseback riding.

For those that travel the trail in Arlington, please be aware of work being performed at Sparrow Pond next week.

Did you know that 14 of the W&OD Trail’s 45 total miles, and 23 road crossings, are located within Fairfax County Government? Please to slow down, stop, or give the right of way and obey all traffic rules before crossing trail and street intersections.

Some of our trail users that frequent the Ashburn area have probably seen the tree work and staging of materials occurring on that section. Please see below, as future work WILL impact trail use.

Q-What is happening?
A- Dominion Energy is preparing to replace wires, a process known as reconductoring, on approximately eight miles of an existing transmission line in Loudoun County between Belmont Substation near Gant Lane and Beaumeade Substation on Smith Switch Road. This work is necessary to maintain electric reliability for Dominion’s customers.

Q-Will the W&OD be closed or detoured?
A- The W&OD Trail will be closed from Loudoun County Parkway to Claiborne Parkway for approximately five days. Both paved and gravel paths will be closed and patrolled by law enforcement. To ensure the safety of pedestrians and cyclists, detour signs will be posted along the detour route.

Q-When will this happen and for how long?
A- Currently planned for Oct. 17 – 21, (subject to change).

Q-Why can't this work be performed in the winter or another time?
A- Dominion can’t take transmission lines out during peak usage season: dead of winter, height of summer; so they have two outage seasons Sept 15 to Dec 31 and March 15 to June 30th.

Q-Where can I see the detour?
A- https://power-viz.com/W&OD-Trail/index.html, and please see map in this post.

Q-Are we done with this detour stuff or is another project scheduled?
A- Phase 2 work between our Ashburn Substation and the Pleasant View Junction (W&OD Trail from Claiborne Parkway to Tuscarora Creek Park) is scheduled to begin in early 2023. Phase 2 will impact the W&OD Trail, including temporary VDOT-approved detours for trail users in spring 2023. The Phase 2 detour is pending VDOT approval. Additional information will be provided once the details are finalized.

Q-I don’t understand why this must happen on park land?
A- Dominion owned the property at one time and Nova Parks purchased the land. Part of the deal when the property was acquired was that Dominion would have the right to access and maintain the lines

Q-Where can I get more information on this project?
A- For more information about this project, visit DominionEnergy.com/Belmont or contact Dominion by calling 888-291-0190 or by sending an email to [email protected].

Those of you who travel the trail in Purcellville may have noticed the transformation taking place across the street from Loudoun Valley High School. Since March 31st, Ian Munro and his son, Ryan, as part of a Father and Son "Town project," have been rejuvenating the drainage area there, removing trash and dead brush, reopening silted-up drainage channels, and installing new plants. Below are some "before"/early photos of the area...
