When you begin your organizing journey, be prepared to experience some unexpected and potentially difficult emotions, particularly if you're attached to your stuff, and have placed significant personal value on them. You will almost certainly have to navigate emotions that have stopped you from moving forward in the past. Here are some tips for how to handle them, adapted from The Gottman Institute:

1️⃣ Become aware of your emotions. Where do you feel the emotion in your body? What's the physical impact of the emotion?

2️⃣ Call them what they are. Emotions are more easily managed when they’re labeled. Ask yourself “Is this anger?,” or “Is this sadness?” Identifying helps you place distance between yourself and the emotion.

3️⃣ Accept them. Feel all the feels. They are normal. Don't try to distract yourself from them, convince yourself it's not happening or assume this is an abnormal reaction. Accept they are there and let it exist without trying to make it go away. The more we push them away, the more they fight for our attention.

4️⃣ Realize they will pass. No matter how overwhelming an emotion may feel in the moment, it will eventually pass.

5️⃣ Be curious. Ask why? Sometimes feeling those difficult emotions teach us something about ourselves, our past and our needs. They arise when there is an imbalance within us. In this way, difficult emotions are our greatest teachers. Become curious about them and figure out where they came from and why now.

6️⃣ Let It Go. Trying to control or "fix" your emotions is like trying to control your heartbeat: it can be done, but it’s going to come with unnecessary discomfort. Emotions need space to be felt, time to be processed, and investigation to be healed. Get familiar with the process and try to allow it to happen organically, without expectation or judgement. Getting to this point puts you in the mindset you need to have to make change in your life.

One of my only reasons to have a storage unit (there are others but not many) is in the situation I am currently in. Our house is going up on the market and our new house will not be built until November or December. So we need a place to store our items in the interim. If you have storage units for stuff, you think you may need someday… Please add a date in your schedule every week or every month and go sit there and start purging. Or you will have to pay me or someone else to go through it for you. Or your grieving family. Please don’t do that to them.
I have done it for many many clients and it is heartbreaking.
