hows that for a beast to hang?
We know parking in OTR can be iffy, but our Director of Facilities Rick Wolhoy found a spot for his 1958 Renault on the side of our building! 😏 Come check his installation out!
This book was a commission from the Art Academy of Cincinnati (one of my Alma Maters) for their Dean of Student Affairs retirement. They asked all AAC Alumni to produce a miniature piece of art for her. Then had me bind them into a book using archival preservation methods, and calligraphy the artist name on each page. The caveat was that one student submitted a painting on masonite and one submitted a piece on stretched canvas so the depth had to be compensated for. I used 8 ply rag for the book cover and the build ups. I used handmade cotton paper and canvas to wrap the cover and pages and muck as adhesive. Each piece is mounted with archival corner mounts, or in the case of the 2 with depth I did a sink mount. All art is removable.
How about a little digital restoration for the day? The original is stuck to glass. You can see in the original where the glass was broken. I had to scan with glass still on it because it was stuck so badly. On the right are rust stains from the metal frame it was in. It's acid burned from cardboard backing, stained and faded as well. Customer asked if i could add a little color like the 'old time pictures'.
This will go down in history as the wall that nearly killed me. It took about 6 hours to lay out and execute. it was my third and last stop of the day (the other 2 were easy peasy). My ladder is 47 pounds and was not fully extended but this wall was taller than the 17 foot reach as an A frame. it was 99 degrees that day and by the end i was sure i was dying. i thought i had heat exhaustion and slept til 10 the next day but had a full day in my shop so i mustered the strength and got to it. i worked til 4 then took my girl to the luke Bryan concert at 6. it was still about 95 at sundown. i was miserable. i slept til noon on friday, woke up long enough to shower then slept again til 7 pm. turns out it was not heat exhaustion it was not only covid but shingles as well. ive now slept for nearly a week and am starting to feel human again. although the shingles admittedly is kicking my butt.
RIP Frida Kahlo. always an inspiration.
Frida Kahlo’s Visits to the United States Helped Crystallize Her Unique Artistic Persona The artist treated clothing as an artistic palette and her way of dressing as continuous with the self-portraits she painted.
Beast of the Day: I know y’all have been holding your breath waiting for this update. The beast is done! 6 men, one woman, a 3 tiered scaffold, 2 custom cleats and a lot of sweat and anxiety got this bad boy up. We couldn’t use a lift because the floors are marble tile and cant support the weight. Aside from the obvious size of the art ( it probably only weighed about 100 pounds) the difficulty was two fold; 1. the bottom would hit right at 12 feet 6 inches and 2. the art is 3 dimensional and front heavy. This made for an interesting set up since the mantle stuck out about a foot and the art was about 12” deep itself, so the scaffold had to sit approximately 2.5 feet away from the wall to get it up there. Thanks to the guys at Bonsai out of Baltimore for their expertise. We took down the small one and relocated it then hing the stunning multi media piece by world famous Nigerian artist Abiola Akintola. in sheer releif of getting this done i forgot to get pics of the room all put back together. stand by though, i’ll snap some next time I’m out there.
Beast of the Day: Actually it shouldve been a beast but wasn’t thanks to Donald Henry Dusinberre. This type of gallery wall is super popular right now with collections of family photos, awards, kids art or like this one (and my personal favorite) art collected while on travel. It took about an hour to layout and execute with Donald’s help and would’ve taken about 2 otherwise. All with no extra holes in the wall. 😁
Cuadros Oasis Mural: Day 4

Cuadros Oasis Mural: Day 1
A good foundation is done and at a good stopping point for the day.
Note to self: painting on cinder block may be more efficient by spraying than it is by roller or brushing. PIA

Good Garbage Karma: when handy items appear regularly on trash piles you pass. These shelves are an upgrade from the previous table base i had for this workbench.
Thought I could fix but sprung the spring and parts went flying everywhere. So i threw them in a box and bought new.
Had the pleasure of installing this little collage for 97 year old Ethel. It took longer than expected but I took my time as she told me the wonderful story behind each piece, where, when and why she purchased them. She still LOVES every piece she ever bought because she purchases from the gut. Turns out shes the step sister of @solwaygallery - yet another tie to home. Today the world got a helluva lot smaller and i was blessed to meet this kind soul.💜
framed using conservation materials too...
Lilly 13 X 22 Gouache on Rag Paper | Etsy A still life gouache painting of a potted lilly with purple blooms and an ornate pot. Framed with acid free silk mat and traditional antique black with gold lip panel frame and conservation glass and backing. I do not make prints of any of my work. This is one of a kind.
Finally received my 2021 birthday/christmas present to myself. Alexander Calder, Mars Equation 1976 original but unsigned stone lithograph

Beast of the day: and not like the usual beast. Mass made pre fab art is more often than not out of square and also warped. Getting these items to line up is tedious. Especially for the average Joe since hanging hardware is included but not installed. I always like educate the customer before hanging so they are aware of what practical expectations are. This type of art is not always cheap either!!! so no disrespect to the collector at all. But is in fact an “it is what it is” scenario”
Customer transitioning from old and heavy traditional style to more light clean and contemporary. Framed and hung this exquisite silkscreen for her.
And it all started at A.B. Closson Jr., Co. in Cincinnati, OH.

Great view flying into Chicago the other night. No filter needed
Some tiny sketches in gouache while waiting for my oil change.
Another happy customer. Sadly for them, they had to hire me to come fix the mess the last installer they hired made. For this statement wall EVERYTHING had to be PERFECT.
Getting it in!
Building that new framing bench I’ve been dreaming about for forever.
All set and ready to go.
Is it a TV or is it art?
