She hung out for longer than I expected before taking off. She's unlikely to be a migrator and possibility might create a new generation that will fly to Mexico. There's no way to know, but it would be cool if we could truly observe what happens next.

“Our nation owes a debt to its fallen heroes that we can never fully repay.”—Barack Obama

Memorial Day is about the soldiers, sailors, and airmen (women are airmen too) who never came home in the name of freedom. It is a day to recognize the great sacrifices given. As you enjoy the day off, take a moment to silently (or not silently, it's up to you) thank those great Americans who gave their lives in service to our country.

The annual International Photographic Competition was held last week, virtually for the first time ever. Over 5000 images were entered, in a total of three categories - I entered my four images in the Portrait Open category (the other two are wedding and artist). One of my images earned a spot in the General Collection which would usually be displayed at Imaging USA in January. Imaging will be online this January so I am not sure how they are displaying the images but knowing the Professional Photographers of America, they'll come up with something outstanding to recognize the achievements of 2020's top competition images.

This image is titled "Puppy Dog Eyes" from Phoebe's puppy newborn session earlier this year.

I'm currently attending PPA's Imaging USA, which is a fantastic conference for professional photographers. Last night we got the majority of the members of VPPA (Virginia Professional Photographers Association) together for a group photo after the first full day of the conference and I had to share that here, as I'm proud of my fellowship with these wonderful people. #imagingusa #vpparocks

Last week was a big week for photographers, the annual International Photographic Competition (IPC), which is like the Olympics, or the World Series, or the Superbowl of photography. It’s a competition not against other photographers, but against ourselves as each image is scored based on its own merit, based on 12 elements of a merit image. Five jurors evaluate each image and determine whether an image is a merit image. There are different levels once an image is determined to be a merit image: merit, excellent, superior, and exceptional. Through image competition, I find that I am challenging myself to do better, not just with images that I plan to enter, but with all of my portrait work. This year I entered four images in the photographic open (four is the limit in each category) and three of them were judged to be merit images. This is my 3rd year of entering IPC and I’m very pleased with how well I did. These three images will be on exhibition at the Professional Photographers of America photographic convention this coming January in Nashville.

I still need to share photos from this gorgeous senior portrait session, but I'm happy that Morven Park is sharing her too.

For the July #PhotoOfTheMonth we've selected this image by G Custom Photography from the "Morven Park Moments: A Photography Partner Showcase" exhibit currently on display in the ballroom of the Davis Mansion. Check the exhibit out during the month of August (mansion admission is required).

Do you ever take a picture and then think to yourself, "a guitar would look perfect here!"? I can't say that I usually do, but the way this little guy posed himself I just couldn't resist!

PPA's district image competition is going on this week, starting today. I have four images entered, and my fingers are crossed that they all do well. This is one of the images that did well in the international image competition last year. We don't compete against others, just against ourselves (in a way). Our images are scored based on 12 elements of a merit image, so the higher the score the better. This is a good explanation of the 12 elements in case you'd like to learn more: https://ppmag.com/news/a-fresh-look-at-the-twelve-elements

Missy hits the nail on the head with this, I see it with my own kids when they notice themselves on our walls. And I think about my own childhood and the printed photographs that show me where I fit in my family and life. She sums it up so well, don't you think?

Never underestimate the power of a print. xoxo

My nephew came to visit today, isn't he so sweet?!

02/22/2019

Last weekend, the Virginia Professional Photographers Association held their annual image competition. I entered 6 images, and 5 of them earned a blue ribbon (which is a score of 80 and above). There were 607 images submitted for the competition, which is the new record for a state competition. I couldn’t be there for the awards banquet, and so I didn’t find out until after the fact that one of my images won Best Child Portrait! I’m beside myself!

I can’t share any of the images here just yet, as there are two more competitions still to enter, the second being Professional Photographers of America’s International Print Competition in August. However, I’ll share one taken when I took my Best Portrait of a Child image. The little girl in the middle was the subject in the award-winning image, and all three girls were such great models for the specific project I did specifically for competition.

The International Photographic Competition (IPC) by the Professional Photographers of America (PPA) was held earlier this month. Two of my images were accepted into the General Collection and will be displayed at Imaging USA in Atlanta in January. Over 5000 images were entered. It's not a competition against others, each image is judged on 12 elements of a merit image. I'm pleased to share these two images with you.

I know it's been a while since I've posted, but I thought I'd share this. I taught a class at our summer seminar yesterday for the first time. It was different and it seemed like everyone enjoyed it.
