Men who commit 4 days of training and education to more effectively deliver self-defense training for women are more than allies - they are shoulder-to-shoulder colleagues. #500rising #IFWSD - these guys get they may be highly skilled in their training background but in working with the reality of violence against women, they know there’s no place for ego if they want to create change.

And we are about to hit it again!

Three long days & a day’s worth of homework required in advance. Deep dive conversation, physical principle based skill assessment, teaching practicals in front of your peers (maybe the most uncomfortable part of all)...what does that equate to? Four Level 1 500Rising Law Enforcement Certified Instructors changing the face of law enforcement through education, training and service committed to changing the statistics of violence against women.

While women can be brutal towards one another - we can change the world together. When we are clear about our agency, live response-ably for our own needs, recognize strength is evidenced in a myriad of ways, and offer respect (whether we “like” each other or not), we can change anything. #500rising

🇺🇲Remembering the Women of WWII: Mary Louise Hawkins, Heroine of the Pacific Theater

On Sept. 24, 1944, 1st Lt. Mary Louise Hawkins, of Denver Colorado, was evacuating 24 patients from the fighting at Palau to Guadalcanal when the C-47 ran low on fuel. The pilot made a forced landing in a small clearing on Bellona Island. During the landing, a propeller tore through the fuselage and severed the trachea of one patient.

Hawkins made a suction tube from various items including the inflation tube from a "Mae West." With this device, she kept the man's throat clear until aid arrived 19 hours later. All of her patients survived. For her actions, Hawkins received the Distinguished Flying Cross.

After the war, Mary Louise relocated to California and married. She continued her nursing career for many years. First Lieutenant Hawkins passed away on July 9, 2007 at the age of 86. Lest We Forget.

we stand on strong shoulders...

Nancy Harkness Love (February 14, 1914 – October 22, 1976), born Hannah Lincoln Harkness, was an American pilot and commander during World War II. She earned her pilot's license at age 16. She worked as a test pilot and air racer in the 1930s. During World War II she convinced William H. Tunner to look to set up a group of female pilots to ferry aircraft from factories to air bases. This proposal was eventually approved as the Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron. Love commanded this unit and later all ferrying operations in the newly formed Women Airforce Service Pilots. She was awarded the Air Medal for her work during the war and was appointed lieutenant colonel in the US Air Force Reserve in 1948.

Today’s entry was known as one of the best stagecoach drivers in the west. From the stables of New England to the gold mines of California, she lived life on her own terms. In fact, when she died in 1879, it was discovered that the person who had lived their life as Six-Horse Charley, a rough and tumble western man, was in fact Charlotte, a mysterious woman who had lived for 30 years as a man.

Charlotte “Charley” Darkey Parkhurst “Six-Horse Charley” – 1812 – December 18, 1879

Charlotte Darkey Parkhurst was born in 1812 in Sharon, Vermont to Ebenezer and Mary Parkhurst. After the death of her mother and her older brother, Charles, Charlotte and her sister, Maria, were taken to an orphanage in New Hampshire. When Charlotte was twelve, she ran away from the facility and adopted the name Charley, taking on a more masculine appearance that would make it easier for her to travel without drawing attention.

With a new identity, Charley started to work with a stable owner named Ebenezer Balch. He took Charley on as an apprentice, assuming that she was a boy, and raising her as his son. Charley proved to have a special connection with horses and was soon learning to drive wagons. Her specialty was six horse coaches, making her a desirable prospect for stage lines to hire. In her late thirties, Charley moved to California from New England. She started to work immediately in San Francisco as a freight driver. However, in California, Charley lost an eye after a horse kicked her in the fast. For the rest of her life, she would have the nickname “One Eyed Charley”.

Charley had one of the best reputations of any stagecoach drives in California. She drove horses along some of the most famous routes, such as the San Jose to Oakland route and the San Juan to Santa Cruz route. Driving a stage coach was dangerous business, with drivers having to contend with dangerous terrain, bad weather, and robbery attempts. It took a cool head and nerves of steel to last any amount of time in the high pressure job.

In 1868, Charley Parkhurst first appeared on an election roll in the city of Santa Cruz, California. While there is no record that she ever cast a vote in the election of 1868, she would have been the first female to vote in a presidential election in California if she did. Local legend in Soquel, California states that she did indeed cast a vote and a plaque was erected in the location to mark the occasion.

As railroads became more prevalent in California, Charley retired from stagecoach driving. She settled in a small cabin in the city of Watsonville, California and worked at farming, timbering, and raising chickens and other livestock. Charley Darkey Parkhurst passed away from tongue cancer on December 18, 1879 in Watsonville, California. She was 67.

When Charley died, neighbors came to take care of the body for burial and made the startling discovery that she was a woman. Not only that, but at some point in her life, Charley had given birth. The little cabin contained a trunk that held a baby’s dress and Charley’s body showed signs of carrying a child. It is unknown what happened to the child of Charley Parkhurst.

The discovery of Charley’s true identity made a sensational story in the press. Many wondered how she was able to hide herself for so long in a truly lawless place. In 1955, a historical marker was placed on her grave in the Pioneer Cemetery in Watsonville, California. It reads, “Noted whip of the Gold Rush days. Drove a stage over Mt. Madonna in early days of valley. Last run San Juan to Santa Cruz. Death in cabin near the 7 mile house, revealed "One Eyed Charlie", a woman. The first woman to vote in the U.S. Nov. 3, 1868.”

Failing Up-

500Rising is a beautiful accident. After listening to Oprah Winfrey’s acceptance speech for the Cecil B Demille Lifetime Achievement award I wrote her a letter. Well, not really. I wrote a blog post. I was on a rant. She mentioned that the #MeToo movement was a game changer. As a Krav Maga and a Self-Defense instructor, I disagreed.

And I was wrong. Sort of. The me-too business has definitely elevated awareness and an increase in dialogue. I’ve been around a few decades (as in 50) and I have seen movements come and go. Mostly go. I was wrong on the social impact side of #MeToo. I’m still pretty sure I’m not wrong about the movement’s capacity to fundamentally change the statistics of violence against women.

I told Oprah (as if - ) that if she wanted tangible change I needed 500 women. 500 women training and teaching foundational, effective self-defense. Self-Defense focusing on threat assessment, tangible situational awareness, and easy to learn/retain basic physical skills. Once these 500 women were out in their communities teaching, another 500 women would get bitten by the project and also become instructors ... and so on.

Eventually we reach a statistical tipping point. A statistical average by which predators become wary because as they look out across their potential victim pool, aka women, they can assume the majority of woman are hard targets: women who are emotionally, cognitively and physically capable of effectively defending themselves.
