Last Friday, I spent the better part of my day watching the Documentary Family Awards. Seeing the submissions is such a treat and I tried not to bite all of my finger nails off as I waited to see if any of my images made it past round one. I was thrilled to see two of my photos in the 100 Days of Summer category. One was passed over quickly but I’m including it here because it’s one of my favorite images from this year. The second photo, Sylvie playing with the blinds, seemed to be a favorite of the judges. I watched in amazement as it climbed to first place in the category. Then I watched as the same photo was awarded second place overall between two amazing images. Thank you judges!

How to Raise a Foodie 12/14/2019

When I was a kid, I wasn’t really into food.

My family tells stories about me eating only butter packets while out to dinner. My mom would have to beg me to take just a few bites of food. I remember eating scrambled eggs, cereal (Frosted Flakes and Cinnamon Toast Crunch), and carrots. I’m pretty sure I survived on chicken patties and pizza during my teen years. In fact, I didn’t become a foodie until my 30s.

I could attribute this title to living and working on a vegetable and dairy farm in my 20s, but I prefer to thank my family. They had been laying the foundation all along. It just took me 30 years to appreciate it. You can read more about my personal tips for raising a foodie over on the Boston Moms Blog.

I am humbled and excited to share that two of my images placed in the Emotion category at the National Association of Professional Child Photographers Inspired Print Competition Event. A third image made it to the Top 100. Thank you to the judges, Elizabeth Blank, Kelly Berry, and BreeAnne Clowdus, and to everyone who worked so hard to make this event possible. And thanks to Matt, Sylvie and Fennec for being my muses. Link to the awards in the first comment.

4 Tips for documenting your day at the Museum of Science Boston (or any museum) 02/14/2019

On Sunday I spent the day with my family at the Museum of Science in Boston. We started going there 5 years ago, when Sylvie was just learning to walk. I debated whether to take my camera because this was a rare winter day when we were all free from sickness and were going to spend the day together. I wanted to focus on my family, not my camera. Of course, the pang of "what if I miss an amazing shot" won out and I popped my camera in my backpack just in case, vowing to be strategic in the process of documenting our day.

I came away with some great photos and 4 tips to share with you about photographing your family at the Museum of Science in Boston (or any museum).

One of my favorite things about the upcoming holidays are all the photo cards. I love seeing how kids have changed over the year, new pets added to the family and adventures my friends have taken. I like to write a year in review with accompanying photos. Whatever your holiday card style, it should be true to you! Spending 4 hours with the Chokel family was such a joy. You read that right...4 hours! If you’re wondering what could possibly take that long for a photography session then you’re thinking about it all wrong. The family wasn’t doing things FOR me to photograph. They were simply being themselves, doing the things they would normally do!
