It always flips back...

If you ship exclusive truckload (EUV) shipments that don't use the entire trailer space, be sure and protect you and your client by adding language to the rate confirmation.

I use this:

"This contract is for exclusive use of the vehicle. No other freight is to be added to this load or the rate may be reduced substantially."

Over the years, I've had carriers get greedy and want to fill their truck and then make my load late, or get damaged etc due to the other freight.

Without this language, it can be difficult to have much recourse if the carrier doesn't want to cooperate.

That leaves you holding the bag to make the customer whole, since they didn't get what they ordered, without help from the carrier.

This then becomes a financial loss for you besides looking bad to your client.

In the freight business, it's ALWAYS about CYA.

To do that, your agreements must be in writing on the confirmation, which is your contract.

You can show your value as a broker by asking the right questions and offering options and solutions that benefit your clients

I was recently sent a shipment from a regular client asking for a flatbed partial for a sign about 10' long.

We usually do these as van partials. I knew on this lane a flat partial was going to be 2 to 3 times more expensive.

In pointing out the extra cost and that we normally did these in vans, I asked what was different this time. They said it wasn't fully crated and they thought it would be better protected in a van.

After our discussion, it was decided to put a little more protection around the outside of the crate and I set up a load to ride partial with a preferred carrier. The shipment arrived on time and safely.

I made less money, and that's okay.

They saved some money, but most of all appreciated my doing what's best for them.

By doing so, I'm also doing what's best for me.

Long term value serves us both and is the reason they don't argue pricing with me on a day to day basis and we have a true partnership together.

Listen and know your client's needs, then offer the best solution for them and you will also always reap the benefits.

I recently found myself telling a customer, "no problem I’ll make that work" when a challenge arose and it reminded me that we used to use that as kind of a slogan around the office.

In the age of the hashtag it would be

Whatever situation came up we wanted to be the ones that could make it work. Solve the problem. Provide a solution. Sometimes I refer to it similarly as being able to hit the curveball.

I also realized I still seem to use it frequently as there are always changes and challenges when handling shipments.

You have to be able to hit the curveball as a Freight Broker.

I still take great pride in making shipping easier for our clients and their customers with the attitude to make it work

Hope everyone has a great Monday and great week!
