This is upsetting. It's not just the big-name authors, it's indie authors too.
It takes me a year to write a novel--the books listed below reflect three years of my life, potentially stolen by Meta to train their generative AI.
If you've seen these blue posts appearing on author accounts over the weekend, it's because we're all just learning our intellectual property was pirated illegally by LibGen and the collection of books was then used in part or full by Meta to train generative AI. Authors were not consulted or paid by the tech company, currently valued at $1.5 trillion.
The Atlantic is reporting on the story and found Meta employees initially looked at licensing books but found the option too expensive and would take too long. They then allegedly reasoned that licensing any books could hurt their claim of "fair use".
I've filed the standard cease and desist letter recommended by The Author's Guild and there is a class action law suit against Meta.
