At 97, Opal Lee reclaimed a piece of family history that had been taken from her nearly 85 years earlier. In 1939, when she was just 12 years old, a racist mob drove her family from their Fort Worth home after they moved into a mostly white neighborhood.

Decades later, Lee returned to that same lot with a story that carried pain, memory, and repair. In 2024, she received the keys to a new home built where her family’s house once stood, turning a place marked by racial violence into a symbol of return.

Known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” Lee had already helped push the nation to recognize Juneteenth as a federal holiday. Her return home added another layer to that legacy. It reminded people that history does not stay buried, and that repair can still matter even after a long wait.

Her story left many reflecting on land, race, justice, and what it means to keep fighting for what should never have been taken.

An 825,000 square foot industrial warehouse is not a humane place to detain people. DHS wants to convert this Washington County facility into one of the largest internment facilities in the country. You have until July 1 to go on record opposing it.

The comments submitted now will follow this project through every stage of the legal fight ahead. Washington County, Maryland, and the surrounding region deserve better. So do the people who would be held inside. Link in bio to submit your comment.

She soared to new heights before getting behind the wheel!

Back in 2025, Kamora Freeland made history at just 17 years old, becoming the youngest licensed pilot in New York and one of the youngest in U.S. history.

She earned her private pilot license on February 26, then got her driver’s license just one day later.
