Reminder to High Country members that our next meeting on Sunday, September 15, will be a clean-out sale of basketry supplies. The sale is open to HCB Guild members only from 1:00 until 2:00. After that, it is open to High Country and other Guild members until it ends at 4:00. Proceeds will go to charity.

We’ll be selling natural and dyed reed, kits, handles and bases, molds, dyes, and books. We also have a large supply of patterns, which are free.

High Country Basketry Guild Story

1985-Present

According to Guild records, the High Country Basketry Guild was formed in the Spring of 1985 “to stimulate interest in and perpetuate the art of basketry in the Virginia, Maryland, and D.C. areas.” The Guild’s name was intended to be The Hunt Country Basketry Guild, but when paperwork was submitted for a non-profit status, the name came back as High Country, and that has remained its name. The Guild received non-profit status around 1995.

For several years after its founding, the Guild’s main event was a Basketry Festival, co-sponsored with the Fairfax Park Authority’s Division of Historic Preservation. The festival was first held at the Dranesville Tavern, and it featured the sale of handmade baskets and supplies and lectures from noted basketmakers from several states. Later festivals expanded to include demonstrations of various weaving techniques, a display of traditional and contemporary baskets, lectures, children’s activities, judged exhibits, and a raffle.

At the outset, the Guild maintained a relationship with the Fairfax County Park Authority, which helped the early Guild with organization and provided meeting space at Dranesville and Colvin Run Mill Park. In return, the Guild provided basketry demonstrations at Sully Plantation and Colvin Run Mill.

By 1989 Guild membership was 100, and the Guild joined Artisans United through the Fairfax Council of the Arts. Meetings then began to be held at the Fred Packard Center in Annandale. During the next several years, the Guild demonstrated basket making at The International Children’s Festival at Wolf Trap, Harvest Days at Sully Plantation, the Northern Virginia Folk Festival, Patowmack Canal Day, the Textile Museum, the Torpedo Factory, Frying Pan Park’s Draft Horse Days, the Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C., and Woodlawn Plantation, as well as various area schools, libraries and community venues. The Guild also held festivals at Northern Virginia Community College, at which weaving demonstrations were given and baskets were sold.

The Tidewater Chapter of the Guild was formed in 1985, meeting first in Virginia Beach and then in Norfolk. In 1998 the Guild was instrumental in organizing a gathering in Tidewater which has come to be Guilders Weave. The Tidewater group was responsible for local arrangements, and both groups provided teachers (free) from the membership and enough students to make the gathering feasible. Although there were no vendors, members from High Country secured door prizes from several basket suppliers.

In 1999 the Tidewater Chapter became an independent Guild, and they now host the annual Guilders Weave in January. Along with Tidewater and High Country, participating Guilds are The Basket Bunch, Deer Creek Basketry Guild, Central Pennsylvania Basketry Guild, and Tri-State Basketry Guild.

The Guild has been involved with many charity projects over the years. For several years, the Guild wove baskets that were filled with toiletries and other small items and distributed to women’s shelters in both Maryland and Virginia. Woven Christmas ornaments were also sold or auctioned for charities. For the past four years, Guild members have also woven Angel Baskets for the Monroe Carroll, Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, a project that provides baskets to bereaved parents to carry their babies from the hospital to a funeral home if they cannot afford pickup by a funeral home.

Currently, the Guild’s charity projects include weaving baskets for the Angel Basket program, participation in the Girl Scout Adventure Day at the Fauquier County Fairgrounds in Warrenton, where we assist the Scouts in weaving a small basket, and participation in Project Echo’s Empty Bowl Supper in Prince Frederick, MD, an annual event that raises funds for a local homeless shelter, for which we weave bread baskets for their dinners and contribute baskets to their auction.
