I carried my story into those classrooms—the story of a little girl who arrived in this country at five years old, a refugee who often felt different, searching for where she belonged. Sharing The Arabic Quilt wasn’t just reading a book—it was sharing a piece of my heart, my journey, and my identity.
Today, I stand proud of my Palestinian heritage and deeply honored to be the first Arab American elected to the Ann Arbor Public Schools Board of Education in 2022. Representation matters. Our stories matter. Our children deserve to see themselves reflected with pride.
Happy Arab American Heritage Month! And from the bottom of my heart, thank you to the AAPS Arab American Advisory Group, the teachers, and the librarians who made it possible to bring these stories into every elementary school.
This is how we build belonging. ❤️🇵🇸

Ann Arbor Public Schools Statement on Incident at Haisley Elementary on Friday
January 17, 2026
AAPS Staff and Community,
We are writing to provide information on an incident that occurred Friday during the dismissal process at Haisley Elementary School. The safety of our students and staff is our priority, and we are taking this situation very seriously. We are committed to the safety and well-being of our students, staff and community. We appreciate the quick response from our school administration and staff, as well as the cooperation and support from our families.
Yesterday an individual who resides in the Haisley neighborhood taped a note with threatening language on a classroom window from outside, and then immediately fled the school property. The Ann Arbor Police Department (AAPD) responded immediately and took appropriate action. The individual fled the school grounds immediately after the incident and they were taken into custody at their home. There is no ongoing threat to students or staff, and the school remains a safe place for learning. AAPD continues its investigation of the incident, with the full cooperation of Ann Arbor Public Schools (AAPS).
In addition to the individual being taken into police custody, another immediate step was the issuance of a no-trespass order against the individual, restricting them from all AAPS property. AAPS will continue to work closely with law enforcement to take further legal action to address this situation to the fullest extent.
The Ann Arbor Police Department has released a statement that provides more information linked here.
The AAPD and district leadership will be at Haisley when school resumes on Tuesday. District staff including school social workers and psychologists will be at Haisley to support students and staff.
Sincerely,
Jazz Parks, Superintendent
Melita Alston, Executive Director, Early Childhood and Elementary Education
Liz Margolis, Executive Director, School Safety and District Operations

Please sign petitions for Michiganders for Money out of Politics - MMOP, Rank MI Vote, and Invest In MI Kids! And of course, volunteers are always welcome!
Also, remember to NOT sign petitions for Prove It Michigan, AxMITax or Education/Teacher Accountability! These ballot initiatives are harmful, especially around marginalized communities, and our education system and teachers.
We are excited about these three Ballot Initiatives that will be on the Nov 2026 Ballot, IF they get enough petition signatures now! Make a point to learn more about these efforts and how they will benefit our state if passed.
If you have yet to sign one or more of these, you can visit their websites to find out where you can sign.

VOTE YES to the Washtenaw Intermediate School District Area Career and Technical Education (CTE) proposal by NOVEMBER 4th. Let’s support all our students!
CTE is an essential part of our PreK-12 education, especially in closing equity gaps by removing systemic barriers, increasing awareness of programs, and tailoring instruction to diverse student needs. It is critical to adequately fund these programs to make sure they are accessible to all. Some of these programs are in partnership with various workplaces and organizations, but all are directly provided by the schools and through their resources. If this CTE proposal fails, these critical programs will need to be funded by the general fund, which would be impossible in many school districts leading to hard decisions on whether to continue these essential programs which are helping many of our vulnerable communities.

**UPDATE: Father is home worh his family**
Today, I have learned that there was a parent of one of our students taken by ICE in the Lakewood neighborhood. This is absolutely devastating and our school and district team and leadership is currently supporting those impacted. As a community, let’s support and be there for this family.
