From NAMA: California regulators have abandoned their ambitious plan to phase out diesel trucks statewide.

In 2023, the California Air Resources Board voted to ban the sale of new diesel trucks by 2036 and require large fleets to convert all their trucks to zero-emission models by 2042. About 1.8 million trucks operate in the state.

To enforce the ban, California needs a waiver from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In December, for example, the Biden administration approved California’s mandate to phase out new gas-powered cars.

But on Tuesday, the board withdrew its requests for approving emission standards for diesel trucks in anticipation that the incoming Trump administration will likely reject them.

Why It Matters: This decision removes the immediate pressure to transition to zero-emission vehicles, allowing convenience services fleets to continue using existing diesel trucks. However, as uncertainty remains about future regulations, NAMA and the California Automatic Vendors Council (CAVC) will continue to monitor this issue.

FEMA Offers Federal Disaster Assistance for California Wildfire Recovery

FEMA has announced that federal disaster assistance is now available to California to support recovery efforts from the wildfires that are devastating the Los Angeles area.

The declaration authorizes federal funding for individuals in Los Angeles County. Assistance may include:

Low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses
Other programs to aid individuals and businesses in their recovery
In addition, federal funds are available to state, tribal, and eligible local governments, as well as certain private nonprofit organizations, on a cost-sharing basis. This support will cover debris removal, emergency protective measures, and direct federal assistance. Hazard mitigation funding is also available statewide on a cost-sharing basis.

If you’ve sustained losses in the designated areas, you can apply for assistance in the following ways:
