Finally Write Book Coaching & Editing
Welcome to Finally Write. Finally Write is dedicated to helping novelists navigate the twists and turns on the road to publication. LGBTQ+ and woman-owned.
Wherever you are on the journey, we’ll get you safely from blank page to ‘The End’ – and beyond. I'm Angelle Madelaine Horste-MacKiernan, founder of Finally Write. I started out as a beta reader in the 90s. Wordsmithing my friends' fiction quickly grew to editing and ghostwriting the stories of friends of friends, and then of strangers. I knew I'd found my calling. In the early 2000s I began offer

~ Author coaching
~ Line editing
~ Proofreading

Many writers make the mistake of writing 'perfect' characters because they're afraid readers won't resonate with them if they have flaws.
In fact, a Mary Sue (or Gary Stu) character is more irritating than intriguing. Real people have flaws. Readers want to read about characters that feel real.

If you're like lot of folks, you probably spend a lot of time agonizing over getting down the perfect words. Sweating, deleting, starting again, and shutting the whole thing down in disgust.
Perfectionism is a trap. First drafts (and even second drafts) aren't perfect. They're messy, ugly, disjointed, and overall terrible things that we wouldn't want anyone to see. And that's fine!
The only bad draft is the one you didn't write because you were waiting for the perfect words.
Write the words. Edit them later. Detach yourself from an unrealistic ideal and finally, write.

Today’s writing tip is from Stephen King:

Writing tip of the day: Write truth.
Even in fiction. Especially in fiction.
No matter if you're writing about monsters or creatures that have never (that we know of) existed. Even if you're writing about voyages to the stars, or beyond. Even if your protagonist is an elf, a troll maiden, or a miner on Mars.
How can you "write what you know" about things you've never seen, about places you've never been?
Doesn't matter. The race of your characters and the ground they walk on (or the skies they fly) are just decoration.
The real story, the truth, is what they feel and want and desperately do NOT want, more than anything else that exists.
Look for their loves (big or small). Look for their hates, their fears. No matter what situation you plop them down in on the page, let these loves, hates and fears pull them inexorably through it. Because those things are so strongly ingrained in them, they will know what to do.
Hear me again: They will know what to do.
Get out of their way and let them do it. They won't be able to help themselves, because loves, hates, and fears are something we all share--even though they are by nature different for each of us. They live inside our bones and they cannot be ignored.
Those are your truths. Write them.

What's your biggest obstacle in writing?
YOU.
Turn off the TV.
Stop rearranging your office to get that 'perfect writing aesthetic'.
Put down the plotting pen.
Stop worrying about it being perfect.
JUST WRITE.
Shut the door. Ignore every other thing clamoring for your attention. Drink endless quantities of tea, coffee, or your favorite beverage.
And JUST WRITE.
Don't open the door until you've got 1,000 words down.
They don't have to be great words. They don't even have to be good words. But get out of your own way and write words.
Then come back at the same time tomorrow and do it again. And again. And again.
What you have at the end? That's writing.
Everything else is just fluffing around and finding excuses why you haven't written.
Finally. Write.

Writing tip of the day:
Please, for the love of all that is good and lovely in the world, STOP describing your characters.
Chances are good you're overdoing it. I'm looking at you. Yes, you.
