For more than 50 years, The Maintenance Shop has been one of Ames’ most iconic venues. From legendary musicians and underground artists to comedians, improv, and open mic nights, there’s always something happening at the M-Shop.

And while you’re there, you can also find our beer on tap and in cans 🌪️🍺

The M-Shop is open weekdays from 11 AM–5 PM, in addition to hosting special events throughout the year. And yes, the iconic stained-glass window still casts its signature orange glow behind the stage, just like it has since 1974.

🌾🍺 Behind the scenes: Milling day

Before the brewing begins, the grain has to be milled.

Here’s a look at our head brewer, Stacy Greone, preparing grain for the next batch of beer. Milling is an important first step in the brewing process, helping prepare the grain for mashing and setting the stage for everything that follows.

It’s one of those behind-the-scenes steps most people never see, but every great beer starts here.

From grain to glass, it all happens right here on campus 🌪️

Did you know this was one of the first steps in brewing beer?

🧪🍷 Wine is more than art; it’s science, too.

Former undergraduate student worker Alex Parrish graduated from Iowa State in Spring 2025 and is now working in the pharmaceutical industry.

So how does that connect back to wine?

During her time with us, Alex gained hands-on experience in our service lab, learning about the chemistry and science behind winemaking, from analysis and quality testing to understanding the processes that shape every bottle.

The skills developed in fermentation science, lab work, and analytical thinking extend far beyond the winery.

Your journey can start here 🌪️

🍷🏛️ Where Iowa State wine comes to life

Did you know our wines are made right here on campus in the Food Sciences Building at Iowa State University?

From processing Iowa-grown grapes to processing, fermentation, and bottling, the winery is where science, innovation, and craftsmanship come together.

It’s all part of the journey from vineyard to bottle, right here in Ames 🌪️

Have you ever seen the winery inside the Food Sciences Building?

Not everything we grow is ready right now, and that’s part of the story.

This vineyard is in its second year, and as with great things in wine, it takes time. These vines are still establishing, building strength before they ever produce fruit.

Recently, we added Clarion, one of the newest cold-hardy grape varieties, to the mix. It’s designed for Midwest growing conditions, and we’re excited to see what it becomes.

Wine doesn’t happen overnight.
But what’s coming next? It’s worth the wait.
