When Ruth approached Boaz at the threshing floor, she asked him to “spread therefore thy skirt over thine handmaid” (Ruth 3:9). The Hebrew word translated as “skirt” can also mean the corner or wing of a garment.
This detail is significant. The corners of Israelite garments bore tassels woven with a blue thread which was a reminder of the covenants God had made with His people (Numbers 15:38–40). Later, these corners became the place where phylacteries and other covenant reminders were associated with faithful worship.
When Ruth asked Boaz to cover her with the corner of his garment, she was asking for more than protection or marriage. She was asking to be brought under a covenant relationship. In a beautiful parallel, Boaz became a kinsman-redeemer to Ruth, just as God invites each of us to come under the shelter of His covenant.
