On this day, June 19 in 1865, General Granger arrived in Texas to announce that the Emancipation Proclamation would be enforced.
The announcement in Texas came two years after the Proclamation had gone into effect at the tail end of the civil war.
Though there would be a continuing struggle for freedom and equal rights, celebrations have marked this day in history ever since.
June 19 became an official Federal Holiday in 2021.

Unearth your love for science! Join the Science Heroes here at the library this weekend on Saturday 6/20 from 3:30-4:30pm for an interactive STEM show for kids ages 5+ and their families.
With help from audience volunteers, the Science Heroes will conduct exciting science experiments all about the changing states of matter, pressure, and more – while raising a shovel to scientists who work with dirt.
Seating is limited and available on a first come, first served basis.
