Dear Comrades, It is with heavy heart that I must inform you of the passing Post Member Clarence Buob. He was a WWII veteran. It is kind of ironic that he passed today on December 7th, Pearl Harbor Day. He was a dedicated VFW member, knowledgeable and supportive in every way. His spunky nature and smile will be deeply missed.
There are no arrangements as of yet, but I will inform you as soon as there is an update.
Below is a drone video on the veterans cemetery being built in Pembroke. It is slated to open in January 2021.
While COVID has us self-quarantining and at a social distance we felt it was still necessary to honor our war fallen, especially since it is the 75th anniversary of WWII.
We held our Memorial Ceremony as respectfully as possible for both the living and the fallen.
Thank you to everyone who helped to make this possible. I will not name names because I do not know everyone involved and I don't want to leave anyone out.
GOOD JOB EVERYONE!!
UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE:
There will be no post meetings held. We are in the same uncertain time as everyone else. We will try to keep you informed as soon as we know how the VFW will be proceeding. Be Well, Be Safe, Be Smart.

The month of May is Poppy time for the VFW. We use the Poppy as a symbol to remember those who have fallen. It comes from the peom "In Flanders Field"...where poppies blow. It was from the time of WWI writen by Maj. John McCrae.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Our Post performed the last rituals for a fallen soldier last night. He served in Afghanistan and was honorably discharged but the demons chased him home and over took him. His fight is over, may he rest in peace.
Today is Pearl Harbor Day. Please observe the today as a day that defended our freedoms and remember the brave soles that faced that day head on and those who did not return to their families at the end of that horrific day.
Happy Veterans Day!

Alden School Tax Exemption for Veterans Update:
According to the Alden Advertiser, the non-binding vote for Alden Veterans to receive a school tax exemption had overwhelming public support. The water has been tested and the Alden community has spoken and shown support for our Veterans. It is important to attend the next school board meetings in order to urge the board to pass the exemption without further discussion or delay. The next school board meeting is June 4th at 7 PM in the High School Library. You must sign in and also sign up to speak.
God Bless our fallen heroes and those MIA.
Starting today it is Poppy Time!! We will be at the Alden State Bank today & tomorrow and Tractor Supply on Saturday. I still need help filling a few 2 hr time slots.
This is one of our bigger fund raisers we do. This money can only be used to help veterans... Not electric or gas bills...veterans only.

An update to the possible Alden School tax exemption for Veterans from one of our members:
Members of VFW Post 7967 attended the School Board Meeting this past Thursday night at the Alden High School Library. Some members spoke out in favor of the Veteran's School Tax Exemption on behalf of the Post Commander who was unable to attend. The board was receptive to the information our members shared and then a school board member reported that members of the New York State Legislature is considering a bill that would have New York State reimburse school districts for any revenue lost as a result of adopting this new school tax exemptions for Veterans. After some discussion about putting everything off until next year, Board member and fellow Veteran Michael Bennett told the board that he preferred to have the straw poll vote this year. The Board voted to schedule a non-binding straw poll to take place at the same time as the school budget vote is taken on Tuesday, May 19th, from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM.
Now it's our turn to act. We need to make sure ALL Veterans in the School District and their family members show up for the Straw poll. Also seek support from your friends and neighbors. Explain that by the School Districts projections, the impact to non Veterans would, depending on which option the Board adopts, only increase taxes between $15 and $30 Per year. If NYS decides to reimburse the districts, there would be virtually no impact on non Veterans.
As a result of the media campaigns, many people are now giving to Charities like the Wounded Warrior Project. Please remind them that a large portion of their donation goes to cover administrative costs for these large organizations. This exemption would go a long way to making our School Taxes more affordable for those who served our country.
God Bless you all and please get the word out about this exemption. For more information, please contact the Alden VFW Post on Facebook. If you see Michael Bennett around town, give him a hug and thank him for pushing the board to move this issue to the front burner. Also try to get him to join the VFW. We need more good men like him.
School Districts Have the Option to Offer Significant Real Property Tax Exemption to Veterans
In December, 2013, the New York State Legislature expanded Real Property Tax Law (RPTL) Section 458-a. As originally enacted in the 1980’s, RPTL Section 458-a provided a partial exemption from county, town and village real property taxes for properties owned by veterans, but expressly omitted school districts from the list of eligible municipalities. In the latest revision, school districts have the option to offer real property tax exemptions to veterans.
To enact the basic veteran’s exemption with default exemption cap levels, the school district must first hold a public hearing; then, the district must adopt a resolution authorizing the exemption with the default cap levels. If a school district desires to change the statutory cap levels, the district must hold a second public hearing and pass a separate resolution authorizing local exemption cap limits.
Several area school districts have now adopted the Veterans Real Property Tax Exemption and the Alden School District has taken it under consideration. Now it’s time for Veterans and their families to make their voices heard. Please attend Alden School Board meetings and sign up to speak to the board so they know that we support this optional exemption for Veterans. The next School Board Meeting is scheduled for March 19, 2015 at 7:00 PM in the Alden High School Library. March 19th is also the 12th anniversary of the beginning of the War in Iraq. Please remember all those who have served in our armed forces.
For more information on this and other Veteran’s benefit programs, please contact Alden Memorial VFW Post 7967 Service Officer, Clarence Buob at 716-937-6131. Alden Memorial Post 7967 meets the third Monday of the month at 7:30 PM at the Alden Community Center, West Main St., Alden. All eligible Veterans are invited to attend.
VFW Post 7967 would like to wish all our family and friends Happy Holidays!
