Curated by Karel Doing Karel Doing and Basement Films’ Beth Hansen, the third edition of the programme series Against all Odds focuses on Albuquerque’s Basement Films.

Close-Up makes film culture and history accessible through its cinema programmes and library. Established in 2005, Close-Up is the most comprehensive independent film resource in London. Close-Up’s film programmes present a series of films that shaped the art of cinema and its history including regular special events with filmmakers present to discuss their work.

Objective, Objective, Repeat

Objective, Objective, Repeat is a collaboration with composer Chris Frain in which the repeated arpeggios echo the looped square frame at the centre of the moving image. The resulting flicker film oscillates between negative, and reversal 16mm film prints of leaf material fed through an optical printer. Hole punched, taped, and digitally re-photographed, the faint microscopic footage of the leaf veins blurs the distinction between organic and inorganic forms.

Experiments in Cinema strives to create an artist-centered, collaborative and critically engaged experience for all our attendees. We remain committed to paying screening fees to all included artists.

Experiments in Cinema v22.3 will take place April 15-18, 2027 in Albuquerque, New Mexico at the .cinema. The festival will be viewable online from April 29-May 11, 2027.

Huge thank you to MoMAZoZo for hosting us for a screening of Hell or Hot Water and other experimental films at the Lyric Theater this past weekend! Paula Wilson, Visual Artist based in Carrizozo, New Mexico and Mike Lagg have created such a magical space and event series in Carrizozo, and we had a blast spending time with them. Thanks to the Carrizozo community members for welcoming us coming out to watch the program!

We’re excited to share a program of films at the historical Lyric Theater at MoMAZoZo in Carrizozo, NM on Friday, July 24th at HIGH NOON!

The screening will feature Hell or Hot Water (2025) as well as short films by members of the Hot Tub Western Ensemble and 16mm films from the Basement Films 📽🎞🎥📼📽 archive. Flute Loops, an anarchic amateur flute ensemble, will perform a live musical score. This event is FREE!

Hell or Hot Water (2025) is an experimental “hot tub western,” created by an ensemble of New Mexico based artists (many of whom are members of Basement Films!) and filmed in Truth or Consequences, NM. The film is an irreverent reimagining of the western genre, playing with the familiar vocabulary of Hollywood - saloon, showdown, dust, card game, fate, death - to create a dreamy camp pastiche. The project took inspiration from such films as Andy Warhol’s Lonesome Cowboys (1968), Kenneth Anger’s Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome (1954), and Sheila Page’s Women’s Happy Time Commune (1972).
