Cota or Indian tea - a delicious wild herb tea

Family: Asteraceae

Genus/Species: Thelesperma gracile

Spanish name: Cota

Other names: Yabanah, hohoise, Indian tea, Navajo tea, Hopi tea, green thread

One of the most delicious local wild herb teas is called cota or té de cota (cota tea) in Spanish. This tall, delicate, yellow flowering plant grows 1 to 2 feet tall with tiny threadlike leaves throughout New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, Texas and Nevada. Here in New Mexico, cota blooms from July to September (depending on altitude and available moisture) along roadsides, open meadows and along arroyos.

Cota is first and foremost a delightful herb tea, producing a red-colored, tart beverage that is refreshing served cold with a bit of fresh wild mint or served hot just by itself or with lemon and honey.

Cota is a very important wild plant for the Hopi and Pueblo people. This Cota was given to me this week. It is used both as daily beverage and as medicine by native and Spanish peoples of the Southwest United States.

The tea of cota contains gentle acids that are excreted in the urine, lowering the pH (increasing the acidity) of the urine. The majority of lower urinary tract infections in the bladder are caused by bacteria that prefer an alkaline environment, so drinking cota tea can help prevent and even treat mild bladder infections. Recent research suggests that the bioflavonoids present in cota also have anti-inflammatory properties.

Consult your health care practitioner about the use of herbs or supplements, especially if you are pregnant, taking prescription medication or administering herbs to children.

My Saffron from my yard in PA

Saffron is mostly picked and harvested by hand. It takes a lot of labor to cultivate these guys so it is one of the most expensive spices. The stigmas are also used to make medicine. Medicinally, it is used for asthma, cough, whooping cough, and to loosen phlegm. What a pretty flower and medicinal spice. 🌸
