Enrichment Tip

Sometimes the simplest toys are the most fun!

Many cats love batting, chasing, and carrying soft pom-poms around the house. Their lightweight movement mimics prey and encourages natural hunting behaviors.

Try tossing a pom-pom down a hallway or hiding a few for your cat to "discover" throughout the day.

Just be sure to supervise play and choose pom-poms that are appropriately sized and durable for your cat.

Quick Cat Fact

Cats have a scent gland on their cheeks, which is why they rub their faces on people, furniture, and other pets.

It's one of the ways they mark something as safe and familiar.

Cat Myth: "Purring always means a cat is happy."

While cats often purr when they're content, they can also purr when they're nervous, stressed, injured, or seeking comfort.

Purring is thought to be a self-soothing behavior in some situations, which is why it's important to look at your cat's whole body language and not just listen for the purr.

Your cat's tail, ears, eyes, and posture tell the rest of the story!

Enrichment Tip: Destroying Feather Toys

If your cat's favorite hobby is pulling feathers out of toys, they're not being naughty, they're being a cat!

Many cats enjoy ripping apart feather toys because it mimics the natural sequence of hunting and "dissecting" prey. Pulling, tugging, and shredding are all normal predatory behaviors that can be incredibly satisfying and enriching.

Just be sure to supervise play and remove any loose pieces that could be swallowed.

Sometimes the best toy isn't the one that lasts forever, it's the one that lets your cat express natural behaviors safely!

Quick Cat Fact

A cat's sense of smell is estimated to be about 14 times stronger than a human's.

That's why new scents, food puzzles, and sniffing opportunities can be so enriching for our feline friends. For cats, exploring the world with their nose is a big part of how they gather information!

What's the weirdest thing your cat loves to sniff?

Cat Myth: "Cats always land on their feet."

Cats do have an impressive righting reflex, but that doesn't mean they're immune to injury.

Falls from windows, balconies, and other high places can still result in serious injuries. That's why secure window screens and cat-safe outdoor spaces are so important.

Being agile isn't the same thing as being invincible!

Enrichment Idea: Nature Box!

Bring the outdoors inside by filling a box with cat-safe natural items like leaves, sticks, grass, or bark. Sprinkle in a few treats and let your cat sniff, explore, and investigate.

For cats, exploring new scents and textures is enriching and mentally stimulating!

Be sure all plants are cat-safe and free of pesticides.

Quick Cat Fact

Ever wonder why your cat stretches so often?

Stretching helps cats increase blood flow to their muscles, maintain flexibility, and prepare their bodies for movement after resting. It may also be one way cats mark territory, thanks to scent glands in their paws!

So the next time your cat does a big stretch, they're doing more than just looking adorable.
