Something my boys absolutely love. This year we are going to get Maple and Ladie in on it too.

It's always a good time to hunt.

It's what everyone keeps talking about. Obedience isn't the answer to everything. Yes he could do what I tell him and make it look good, but that's not what I want for him. I want him to be comfortable while he does his job.

It's not realistic for me to take 8 dogs to the park twice a day, I do the absolute best I can to get it done most days.

When I can't we do something like this.

I didn't make Gremlin friendly by letting everyone pet him. He is friendly, that's just who he is.

I did make him entitled, that was all me, and it was incredibly tough to undo.

I didn't change his personality with training. In fact he has a real job now where he gets to go and be as friendly as he is, it just involves manners and an inside voice.

I was convinced that if I gave my dog enough treats, exercised him every day, and let him meet every person and dog we came across, everything would fall right into place.

It didn’t.

Instead, I ended up with an entitled, screaming puppy who had very little interest in doing what I asked unless I had food, and only if there wasn’t something more interesting competing for his attention.

I didn’t find my answers from watching reels or short videos on YouTube. If anything, that just made things more confusing.

The answers I was looking for came elsewhere.

If I’m trying something new, I like to try it with my own dogs first.

I’ve worked on this a little with Ladie and Gremlin. They’re both extremely different in how they operate and what they care about.

I would NOT use tone for either of them in an emergency situation. That’s not something I’d chance.

It is fun to have a silent recall, though. For Gremlin, tone means one thing and one thing only: get back. It keeps things simple.

He got one for checking in, that's a quality I greatly appreciate in Gremlin. He cares about where I am in relation to where he is at. I highly value that so I tell him.

When I ask him to do something and he does it, I will tell him good. That means he's doing the right thing but I need him to keep doing it.

I do not use food or toys in this context, there is no reward marker. It's "good" and "free".

This dog is my heart.

Good choices make moving together quick work.
