Our Principles
As members of the Summit County Progressive Democrats, we believe in:
-a government of, by and for the people of the United States
-the immutability of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and the freedoms, rights and protections they convey to the American people
-equal economic opportunity for all people of the United States and an equitable distribution of nation's wealth
-recognition of the responsibility of American society to assist those citizens who cannot or can no longer provide for themselves
-a respect for the environment and the responsibility for its stewardship
-social justice for all individuals regardless of race, gender or sexual orientation
-a separation of church and state in the development of public policy and its implementation
-support for a strong and equitable public education system
-the right of every individual to affordable healthcare
-an equitable, accountable election system where the right of every citizen to vote and to have that vote counted is honored
-an open and transparent government that truly informs its citizens and supports discussion and consideration for opposing viewpoints
-a foreign policy that advocates multilateralism and cooperation with other countries in the maintenance of U.S. security and world peace
-preemptive war as a foreign policy is contrary to American and international law
-a woman's right to reproductive choice
-the right of labor to freely organize and participate in collective bargaining
-the concept that a people's right to dissent and to oppose policies they deem harmful to the common good is an essential ingredient of democracy
-true patriotism requires three elements: a deep love of one's country; a willingness to praise and defend its virtues; and the courage to recognize and correct its deficiencies.
-a free and unencumbered media is essential to a fully functioning democracy, and that our media must be protected from political and corporate manipulation.
-Government has a responsibility to protect the public from unsafe and unfair practices and products.

MEET THE JUDGES
WHAT: a 2026 General Election Candidate Forum
WHEN: Tuesday, October 13 at 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
WHERE: Akron Summit County Public Main Library

Each Candidate will speak to the general audience, followed by a reception where you can speak to the individual candidates to learn more about their candidacy and their character.

In addition to all the activities listed below SCPD will have a table at which we will be helping people get ready and make a plan to vote.
If you have some extra time that day, we could use a few more volunteers to help out any time between 10am and 6pm. If interested, please contact Sherrie Weitzenhof at [email protected]​.

We can advise folks on how to vote early, vote by mail or vote in person at your assigned polling place on November 3rd.
We can still register voters however, registrations must be delivered to the Board of Elections by Monday, October 5th.

One of our founding and current members of SCPD, Todd Schneider, recently wrote the following excerpt regarding his joining the 8/27 March on Washington:
On Thursday, the 27th of August, I had the great benefit of grabbing a seat on a bus with The Urban League to attend “the 63rd anniversary (I was just 8 in 1963) of the March on Washington and origin of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Though I don’t know anyone who’s ever enjoyed the physical trip to DC on a bus itself, due to its unavoidable, uncomfortable nature, I consider the experience to have been a gift of a lifetime.
All of the young Americans, the UAW members from all over Ohio supporting Sherrod Brown and Dr. Acton, and, most of all [for me] was spending time relaxing and talking with a few dozen members of the marvelous Delta Sigma Theta Sorority from all over the country that made Friday special.
These proud women and avowed social activists are part of an historic sorority that was born in 1913, and had, as their earliest dedicated mission, The Women’s Suffragette Movement. Their wisdom, accomplishments and kindness to an old guy like me from Cuyahoga Falls reminded me that a day on a bus with almost no sleep was meaningless in comparison to the blessings I received in return.
