Today's Faces of Fuel feature is Jeff P. (pictured on the right), Meter Reader at our Clarence Service Center. Jeff has a remarkable story. At 10 years old his mother passed away from ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). In 2016, his sister (pictured below) also passed away from this disease at the age of 32. Before she did, Jeff asked her what testing she went through to confirm her diagnosis in an attempt to be proactive for his own health. Jeff found out he has a less-aggressive form of ALS and decided that day he would practice his sister's philosophy in life- "there is good in everything."

Each day Jeff walks more than 14 miles reading meters. He enjoys what he does and comes to work with a positive attitude. Jeff is passionate about raising awareness for ALS and walks each year to support the ALS Association Upstate New York Chapter. He also volunteers with the Newstead Fire Company and has done so for more than 18 years. Jeff's story is full of strength, hope, and compassion. We're fortunate to have him on the National Fuel team and thank him for inspiring us to look for the good in all aspects of our day. #FacesofFuel
We want to give a major shoutout and sincere thanks to all of our firefighting heroes, who stepped up to raise dollars for wish kids battling critical illnesses.

From the beginning of August through today, fire departments and companies around the region have been holding Fill-A-Boots and other fundraisers in support of the upcoming 25th Anniversary Make-A-Wish Radiothon on 97Rock.

13 departments in total have come through for Make-A-Wish, and we are indebted to them for their charitable efforts. Today alone, we have 7 Fill-A-Boots happening throughout WNY! 💙

Please help us applaud:

Today the Newstead Fire Company hosted a day drill with our neighboring companies Akron Fire Company, Clarence Fire Company, and Clarence Center Vol Fire Co., where members trained in heavy extrication and stabilization. Crews used various tools and methods to assess a scenario where a bus rolled over onto a car, stabilize both vehicles and extricate “patients.” Training with our area companies is a key asset in learning what each other has for tools and equipment as well as building relationships to improve teamwork for future situations. Great job by all the members who took them out of their weekend to participate in a great drill!

We have a little catching up to do, first we would like to congratulate firefighter Lindsey Pumm on completing her IFO and CFR training. Lindsey is now a certified interior firefighter.

Second we would like to congratulate firefighter Andre Sponholz on completing his CFR class. With completion of this class both Andre and Lindsey now have their EMS qualifications and can better serve the community.

Third we would like to congratulate firefighter Brock Hawes for completing his firefighter boot camp. With this class Brock is now certified as an interior firefighter.

Great job to all for putting in all the work for their community.

Last night Newstead and Akron Firefighter went out to the Erie County Training Facility to train on basement fires. Despite the warm weather instructors created a high heat and smoke environment to challenge our members while practicing search and rescue and fire suppression. A big thank you goes out to all the members who participated, the Akron Fire Company for joining us, and the instructors who hosted our training.
