Handmade Cutting, Charcuterie and Tasting Boards, Drink Rails, and custom designed hand-built furniture. So, my wife asked me, “What do you want to do?”.

After 4-years consulting and 18-years working full-time for UnutedHealth Group/Optum in Information Technology, I was laid off out of the blue. Well, being a few years away from retirement and the last several years performing specialized IT work, I really didn’t have too many career options in the white-collared world. The first word out of my mouth was “woodworking”. I have been woodworking sinc

Heads up for anyone with a sink in their island, or like me have a log home.

When you normally vent a sink, you run the vent pipe up through the wall and out of the roof. When you can't because of being in an island, log wall, etc... the plumber will put an under-cabinet Auto Vent valve on the waste pipe to vent the sink(s) to allow them to drain quickly.

They DO go bad eventually and trust me, YOU WILL KNOW! Go to the hardware store and get a new one for like $30, unscrew the old one and screw on the new one, problem solved!

The clients liked my design with it sitting on top versus being recessed. You get to see the patina on the rails. 100% bolted down on the inside of the rails and rock solid. The top of the sled is a table-top that's waterproof AND red wine stain proof!

What a "FUN" friggin day. Saw doc with MRI results on my wrist, yeah, partially torn tendon, tendinitis, and on...yeeeeaaaahh. Wearing a friggin brace for weeks on end all day.

Then the day really got started...I knew the lathe had a bad motor that was going to fail eventually (long story, but all good as i expected it) but I got a replacement motor and power/rpm unit when I bought it. Whelp, it 💩 the bed. Soooo, yeah, Crew Chief Phil time today with a bum wrist, but...the new system is done!

K...new wood combination found by the "Philism" of...WTF, give it a whirl and lets see what happens.

Maple, with a Cherry center and Purple Heart. Stunning result I think.

Jeff Ayotte well, i did it. When you wanted the custom counter-top I built, made into two end tables, I was like "how in the am I going to make a countertop look like a furniture piece?!?!?" According to Kathy, I did it.

Sanded to 400-grit on the tops and the 1st of 4 hand-rubbed coats of OSMO Polyx Satin applied. Then a quick hand sand of 1500-grit and done. It will be done by the end of next week.

If you get a laserpecker engraver with the tripod, throw out the tripod, it's as useful as a senior manager. It took me twice as long to get the tripod set up than it was to brand. Wicked inefficent, but not anymore.

I modified the container that the laser came in with a 2" bit, built a simple box that has the laser exactly at 20cm, yeah i had to convert it too... ~8"...so the laser is the optimum distance away from the surface.

Fellow woodworher FYI: As a woodworker I use my pipe clamps ALL the time for gluing. Everytime I glue up projects I take the Lord's name in vain as the glue build-up on the pipe forces me to beat the 💩 out of the slide jaw with a hammer to move it. Then the black pipes would leave a black mark on the wood.

So, today I glued up a couple of small items and said FiretrUCK this! I took off the clamps, put the pipes into my lathe at 750rpm and hit them with 36 and 80-grit, then a coat of Mother's car wax and put them back together. Night and day now!

My "thought" is that the wax will keep the glue build-up down and stop the black stains when gluing. If not, then oopsies.

The customer that I met at the Vermont Wine Festival wanted me to make a coffee table out of their old sled. So I told them my thoughts on a design and they loved it.

The top of the sled height is 21" as their designer wanted. But, you now use the sled as the primary top for drinks. I finished the top, including the metal, in 3 hand-rubbed coats of OSMO Polyx Hardwax-oil. It is 100% red wine stain-free now!

The base maple top is also used to hold drinks. I changed my usual style of legs and made them rectangular and setting the long side in parallel to match the sled rails. I also chose cherry versus matching maple as to match the reddish tint of the sled when cherry ages.

The use of two different woods accomplished what my mind saw when i looked at the sled. All maple would have looked as boring as sh$t with the sled on top. Thats why I told them that I had artistic control of the final design...NOW it is truly a conversational piece, plus it is 100% functional.
