Kampala roads: mismanagement, insufficient budget, or inappropriate repair works?
Several indicators suggest ongoing repair works could be inappropriate.
More in this Daily Monitor editorial!
Kampala roads: Mismanagement, insufficient budget, or inappropriate repair works? Regarding management issues, the establishment of the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) and the Uganda Road Fund (URF) in 2006 and 2008, respectively, represented positive strides at the...

It was a great experience at the Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.! Insightful sessions with thought-provoking discussions and networking with experts.
Thanks to the leadership of the Center for Sustainable and Resilient Infrastructure (Gerardo Flintsch, Samer Katicha, Edgar de Leone-Izeppi) at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) for the platform to conduct research, mentorship, and funding this trip.
I also thank my colleagues, Ernesto Urbaez, Carolina Benavides Ruiz, Tong Bilin, and Bazmara for their comradeship.
Finally, thanks to the Virginia Department of Transportation and Federal Highway Administration, U.S. Department of Transportation for funding our research at VTTI.

🚗 Optimizing Roads for a Sustainable Future: Join the Discussion at TRB Annual Meeting!
To plan and budget for maintenance and repair of road networks, engineers and road network managers need to know the condition or “health” of the roads in detail.
Traditional methods to determine the health of roads only consider the observable surface problems like cracking and other imperfections.
These problems cause discomfort when driving on the roads but do not tell whether the underlying road structure is strong or weak.
Exciting news! Our research at Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) has unveiled a method to assess road networks in detail.
By considering both observable surface issues and the strength of the road structure, we can now tell the full story, plan effective repairs, and extend the life of roads—all while saving costs.
📅 Join me on January 9th at the in Washington D.C. during Latern Session 3141 to delve into the details of this innovative method. Let's discuss how it can revolutionize road maintenance and repair strategies.
Special thanks to my co-authors Samer Katicha, Ernesto Urbaez, Gerardo Flintsch, and Brian Diefenderfer

This OpEd in the Daily Monitor initiates the dabate on /accidents in Uganda. Systematic investigations can focus on breaking down crash data to identify GPS coordinates where the crashes occur in the road network, and analysis of geometric and surface characteristics of problematic sections. Possibly other records from crash reports can be helpful in identifying patterns in some other human factors.
Accidents: Road designs or driver behaviour? Road safety is a global concern, and Uganda is no exception. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), road accidents claim the lives of approximately 1.35 million people annually, with...
