This is however a decrease by 63 from the 90 groups that benefited in the current financial year --- 2021/2022. Of the 90 groups that were funded in the current financial year at a tune of Shs480m, only 20 groups fully paid back the money as required at a tune of Shs108m.

Local Fishermen Warned Against Poor Fishing Methods
Local fishermen in Kitgum district have been warned against using chemicals and other substances while catching fish as this is hazardous to human and livestock health.
The warning comes after complaints from a section of residents in Labongo Akwang and Mucwini sub counties that some fishermen are lacing the waters with poison, a practice that hasn’t only indiscriminately killed fish, but livestock like cattle and goats.
Mr. Alfred Omony, the Kitgum District Fisheries and Production Officer told Tembo fm in an interview on Monday that it has also come to their notice that some fishermen are using local herbs like Neem leaves that is pounded and poured into Rivers Pager and Aringa.
He says the practice is harmful to human health since it causes a number of infections and can lead to death. He adds that the practice is equally deadly to fish since it indiscriminately kills fish including the fingerlings.
Mr. Omony said despite the challenges the fishery staff face in monitoring the water bodies; they are embarking on massive sensitization of the public on how to identify fish caught using illegal means like poisoning since they present with chocking smell and go bad so fast shortly after capture.
He implores local fishermen to practice the traditional fishing methods like use of Fish nets, hooks and baskets in order to preserve immature fish.

One killed, 50 houses burnt as Turkana warriors raid Kaabong district
Over 800 people in Locheker East village in Kaabong district, northern Uganda are currently homeless after their homes were burnt to ashes by suspected armed Turkana warriors from neighbouring Kenya.
The unfortunate incident in Kurao parish, Kalapata sub-county took place on Sunday morning at around 7 am. Peter Chegem, secretary of defence in Locheker village said the Turkana attacked the village, shot dead one person and burnt 50 houses and looted several items such as saucepans, sorghum, millet and maize harvests that people had stored in their granaries.
"We lacked the strength to defend ourselves because we didn't have guns, and even the fire spread so fast given the current wind in the region," he said.
Kalapata sub county speaker Samuel Locoro said the Turkana were acting in revenge following a raid by Dodoth boys who had gone and raided animals in the Turkana kraals.
"I understand some boys from Kalapata had gone and raided animals from Turkana kraals, so the Turkana followed the footsteps up to Locheker village, unleashing mayhem until they burnt 50 houses," he explained.
Kaabong district chairman Jino Meri said the general insecurity in Kaabong and Karamoja sub-region at large is worrying. He said the burning of the village in Kalapata further worsens situation that the people of Kaabong go through daily.
According to Meri, many people now don't sleep at their homes and whenever it reaches 5 pm, people leave their homes and go to sleep in the trading centres for safety. Micheal Longole the Karamoja regional police spokesperson said a team of detectives have been sent to assess the situation.
