As a reminder,
Uganda's oldest Film Festival - Amakula International Film Festival starts today at exactly 6pm (keep time) at the Kampala Film School (Kampala University) in Ggaba. You don't want to miss any Film off the programme as they are all great! The screenings today and tomorrow are free. Fell free to share this with your friends and invite them to join you.

The drive-in cinema experience begins on Friday the 16th - Saturday the 17th at the Uganda Museum (Gardens). Prepare your cars, motorbikes, bicycles, and blankets as you shall experience the best outdoor cinema experience seated in, on and outside your cars while watching amazing Films on a wide LED screen with the help of silent disco headphones.

Please note that on Friday from 2pm - 4pm there is an important panel discussion on 'Film Regulation in Uganda' inside the Uganda Museum - Exhibition hall.
There will also be one on Saturday same time, same space on 'Marketing a Ugandan Film.

Für unser Festival kuratieren wir jedes Jahr eine Auswahl hochkarätiger afrikanischer Kurzfilmproduktionen, im Austausch bringen wir deutsche Kurzfilmproduktionen nach Afrika. Dieser Austausch wird durch die Wirtschaftsförderung Karlsruhe unterstützt.

For three years now there has been a cooperation between INDEPENDENT DAYS, the Ngalabi Short Film Festival in Kampala/Uganda and the Goethe Centre there. For our festival we curate a selection of top-class African short film productions every year, and in exchange we bring German short film productions to Africa. This exchange is supported by the Karlsruhe Economic Development Corporation.

📣The 5th Ngalabi Short Film Festival 2021 - HYBRID EDITION brings to you another creative short film called 📽“Heaven Sounds Boring”📽 by Ugandan female director, Patience Nitumwesiga in 2020. Her work will be screened for 23min under the theme GROWING PAINS on the 26th June ONLINE. You Do NOT want to Miss THIS!!!

FILM SYNOPSIS //A man realizes that his daughter’s terminal illness will soon take her life. As he grapples with the heartbreaking reality, his daughter sets on a mission to prove to him that according to her long dead grandmother, death is not the end of life in African tradition. The man, who is christian, struggles to understand what his daughter is saying, thinking she is too young to understand his pain. On her part, the girl thinks he is too christian to see beyond what his faith has taught him. Both father and child offer comfort to each other in the best way they know how as they race against time to spend every second with each other before death separates them forever. This daughter-daddy story explores questions of the afterlife, and both Christianity and African tradition offer no easy answers to the strongly bonded pair.

THE DIRECTOR // Patience Nitumwesiga’s short film, Communion (Uganda, 2018) received Honourable mention in 2019 at Cape Verde’s Plateau - Festival Internacional de Cinema and toured numerous festivals (2018-2020) and her second short film Heaven Sounds Boring, 2020, is awaiting release. Nitumwesiga directed Keepers and Better Than Yellow, at the Uganda National Theatre during the 48 Hours in Harlem Festival in 2018. She was researcher and 1st AD on the multiple award-winning feature documentary Somebody Clap For Me (Uganda, Qatar, Brazil, UK, 2017); as well as a writer and 1st AD in Ugandan Tv Series Yat Madit (2016), which aired on Nation Media’s NTV Uganda, 2016; Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC TV), 2020. She wrote numerous episodes of the comedy Tv series Love Makanika (2015), DSTV Pearl Magic 2019. She runs Mbaganire -an African Folktales Podcast among other social political projects. More about her work can be found on her website.

FILM SYNOPSIS // In a mythical Sudanese village between the desert and the Nile, a young boy enjoys an idyllic childhood, taking pleasure in the fertile fruits of the land and basking by the river. But the boy's precious world begins to unravel when he learns the disturbing truth behind his family's fortune, and a certain farmer's inevitable demise.

THE DIRECTOR // Hashim Hassan received his B.A. in Middle East Studies from UC Santa Barbara and his M.F.A. in Directing from the American Film Institute in Los Angeles. and a B.A. graduate of the Middle East Studies program at UC Santa Barbara. He began his stage acting debut as Peter in The American University of Cairo's production of Edward Albee's The Zoo Story, continuing to act and direct stage productions for University of California Santa Barbara's Multi-Cultural Drama Company. A Handful of Dates is his first filmmaking venture in Sudan. Hashim is currently a freelance Video Producer in California's Central Valley - collaborating on various film and video projects.
