Violent extremism does not begin with violence alone. It grows where exclusion, mistrust, misinformation, injustice, fear, and vulnerability are left unaddressed.

Safer and more resilient communities are built through daily actions of political leaders, security actors, faith & cultural leaders, civil society, businesses, media, families, and communities.

Through the Peace Beyond Borders Project, implemented in partnership with Pole Institute and the Kofi Annan Foundation, and funded by the European Commission we are sharing simple and practical minimum practices that different actors can integrate into their daily roles to strengthen community resilience and reduce vulnerability to violent extremism.

These practices promote trust, dignity, inclusion, early warning, responsible communication, support for victims and survivors, and collective action for peace and security.

Swipe through the corousel to explore the actions different actors can take to help build safer, stronger, and more peaceful communities.

Approximately 73.3% of youth report decreased agricultural productivity, while 76.96% report destruction of property due to climate-related events . These losses undermine economic stability and deepen poverty, increasing grievances and the risk of conflict in already fragile settings.

This research was conducted in Burkina Faso, Niger, Pakistan, the Philippines, Somalia, and Uganda.

This comparative study was co-designed by the Kofi Annan Foundation, SIPRI and young researchers from these six nations to explore the intersection of climate change and conflict through the lived experiences of young people.

🌱Is climate change quietly driving conflict among young people in Uganda?

New evidence from Prospect Initiative’s Resilience Rising report highlights a strong link between environmental stress and rising tensions in vulnerable communities.

In the Rwenzori sub-region, climate-related shocks such as floods and droughts are disrupting livelihoods and increasing competition over land and water. Nearly 58% of respondents believe climate change is worsening youth vulnerability.

This research was conducted in Burkina Faso, Niger, Pakistan, the Philippines, Somalia, and Uganda.

Project inception in Kasese and Kiryandongo: District and community leaders in Kasese & Kiryandongo districts, came together to coin a shared response to the growing intersection of climate change & conflict.

Through inclusive dialogue with government actors, cultural and religious leaders, civil society, and youth representatives, the inception meetings strengthened collective understanding of climate as a “threat multiplier” and identified practical pathways for coordinated action.

From floods and landslides to land pressure and livelihood disruptions, leaders deliberated on lived realities, co-creating locally driven solutions that integrate peacebuilding with environmental action.

The engagement reaffirmed a direction that sustainable impact requires community ownership, alignment with existing governance systems, and active participation of youth, women, and local leaders at every stage.

Local leaders are beginning to recognize that crisis preparedness must also address violent extremism-related incidents and the needs of victims.

In recent capacity building dialogues, it was noted that various gaps in existing disaster response systems largely focus on natural hazards while overlooking post-attack care and victim support.

Local authorities now integrate violent extremism crises into emergency planning and consider victim-centered recovery as part of routine governance.

In Makindye, the Community Development Officer has expressed interest in volunteering with the Victims of Terrorism Association of Uganda and supporting the inclusion of victims in future government development programming.

Building common ground starts with bringing the right people to the table.

This week in Kiryandongo District, together with FinnChurch Aid Uganda we convened introductory meetings with district leaders, security actors, and community stakeholders to launch the Peacebuilding and Climate Action project.

The engagements created space to clarify roles, strengthen coordination, and build a shared understanding of how local institutions and communities can work together to prevent resource-based tensions and support resilience.

Landlords are increasingly playing a frontline role in community safety.

Through simple "Know Your Tenant" practices such as verifying identification, requiring LC letters, and registering tenants with local leaders, many landlords are strengthening accountability and reducing security risks in their communities.

Some are also adopting more empathetic approaches to tenant management, recognizing that dialogue, guidance, and community engagement can help prevent vulnerability and strengthen social responsibility.

Under the Peace Beyond Borders project implemented by Prospect Initiative (Uganda), Pole Institute(DRC) and Kofi Annan Foundation.

Landlords in some parts of Kasese and Kampala were sensitized on peacebuilding, community resilience, early warning and vigilance. Peace Beyond Borders is funded by the European Commission.
