"The advancement of women and the achievement of equality between women and men are a matter of human rights and a condition for social justice and should not be seen in isolation as a women's issue. They are the only way to build a sustainable, just and developed society. Empowerment of women and equality between women and men are prerequisites for achieving political, social, economic, cultural and environmental security among all peoples"

Access to justice is not just a.moral imperative bit a legal right under the ambit of international law and the constitution and national laws of any state, Uganda inclusive. Under international law, and indeed the laws of most states, this is not just a legal right but a human right, which must be recognized, implemented and practiced by all states.
Understandably since access to justice covers a wide variety of ideas or issues, it is not so much that there is a specific reference to access to justice as a right in legal instrument. Rather, underlying the concept of access to justice , are notions ov equality and fairness which are bedrocks of human rights.
This there are various human rights protecrions covering broad issues such as equal treatment of all by the law, humane and fair treatment by law enforcement agents, the right to initiate proceedings, the right to l gal counsel, the right to a fair hearing before the courts and most important of all the right to effective remedies.

It's on this basis that proponents of gender equality and women's rights draw their arguments.
#equalityforall is ideal for any society to develop!

A growing body of VAWG prevention practice and evidence demonstrate that it is possible to prevent VAWG, and this in a shorter timeframe than expected. Prevention is a particularly cost effective strategy with potential medium to longer- term abs inter- generational payoffs.
Early prevention abs intervention and other strategies can help prevent repeated cycles of violence, and all its avoidable social, economic abs human rights costs.
Violence against women and girls is learned, and can therefore, be prevented, especially if efforts begin early in the life cycle.

As a country, we need to ensure that much of the VAGW polices and programs focus on not only responding to violence and mitigating its impacts after the violence has occurred, BUT more attention, efforts and funding need to focus on preventing violence from occurring in the first place through primary prevention- preventing violence before it happens in the first instance!

As IGSJ, our advocacy efforts are geared towards addressing the widespread cultural acceptance of violence that allows it to continue, often unchallenged✅

UNDERSTANDING THE CONCEPTS OF EQUALITY & EMPOWERMENT:)

These levels of equality are hierarchical, suggesting that a development intervention that focuses on the higher levels are more likely to increase women’s empowerment, than one focusing on the lower levels. Equal control over resources such as land is on a higher level (control), than access to the land, a lower level (welfare). This approach takes the view that if equality is intrinsice to the definition of women’s development, this brings with it the necessary corollary of women’s empowerment as the means to overcoming obstacles to the achievement of equality between men and women. The Framework suggests that women’s advancement can be understood in terms of a concern with the five levels of equality shown below. Empowerment is a necessary part of the development process at each level for women to advance to the next level, and for them to advance progressively through all the levels towards equal status with men.

“Gender-based violence is not a separate issue, but a phenomenon that is intimately connected to countless other social issues. Unless we have a great grasp of the dynamics of those other issues, we will never be able to eradicate the problem of gender-based violence,”

Gender based violence, especially s*xual violence seems to be on the rise in every corner of our communities! Child, Forced, Early Marriages are now order of the day in many of our families and communities! Although Uganda continues to be among the countries with the best policy and legal frameworks to tackle And prevent this vice, we continuously see the numbers of reported victims increasing. There are many victims whose horrible and traumatizing stories never come to the light of social media or reported to police!
As a country, we need to engage and mobilize aggressively all forces to confront this monster, confront the perpetrators especially the s*x predators and set enabling environment for our girls to enjoy and thrive in life!
We must change and eliminate gender discriminatory practices, gender based violence and harmful practices, social norms that support these practices and behaviors must be transformed right away from within ourselves as men, in our families, in our communities and society in general.
We also need to recognize the existence of interplay among structures as well as economic context in which norms operate. Changing social norms therefore will need to entail working through multiple channels to create a social movement and mobilizing our people among practicing groups and other individuals who are influentials and have the power to make decisions.

STOP POVERTY BEFORE IT STARTS. ACTION IS NOW_SDG5:)

Across the developing world, girls and women continue to bear a disproportionate burden of poverty. Yet we know it is possible to take effective practical action that enables girls and women to fulfill their potential.
And we know that the benefits of investing in girls and women are transformational – for their own lives and for their families, communities, societies and economies.

Empowering girls and women has multiplier effects for economic growth and achieving all of the SDGs. If we reach girls, in particular, early enough in their lives, we can transform their life chances.

Giving girls greater choice and control over decisions that affect them helps break the cycle of poverty between one generation and the next. Once we take bold steps with gender equality lens, then It enables us to stop poverty before it starts!

Child labour is one of the common forms of injustices and exploitation in many of our communities. Its biggest injustice of child labour in that it takes children out of school and denies them the opportunity of an education and the chance to break out of the cycle of poverty, perpetuating other forms of socioeconomic disparities.

Children are seen as profitable assets since their pay is very low, less likely to strike, and are easy to be manipulated.

Because people living in poverty often have a low sense of self worth and personal or even collective power, such situation gives them another experience and presents deeper struggle to bring about a much needed change. Through awareness of their rights combined with critical consciousness can empower such people living in poverty esp. Women to initiate struggles within the parameters of what is possible in their context! For this reason, IGSJ emphasizes the starting point of people's own context to be fundamental!!

The COVID-19 pandemic calls for an immediate coordinated, people-centered and gender-sensitive response. Our Government, Businesses, Workers representatives, Workers funds and individuals all need to be involved to mitigate the impact on people’s lives and to address the specific risks and vulnerabilities girls and woman face because of the deeply rooted inequalities and stereotypes in our societies.
All sectors of the economy have the responsibility to use their power, influence and resources to protect the rights s s physical and mental well- being of employees and all citizens during this time, as well as to ensure long term recovery efforts to restore economic stability!
Let’s all play a key role in addressing the needs of women and girls!

The Covid_19 pandemic has reinforced already existing gender inequalities, leading to increased cases of GBV and SGBV related cases resulting from stay at home restrictions. The government and various stakeholders should therefore take not of this correlation as they review their Covid_19 response plan. #GenerationalEquality #Endviolenceagainstwomenandchildren

Over 136 countries have accepted to make the fight against GBV and domestic violence part of their COVID-19 response plan. I hope Uganda also heeds to this call and follow suit - Susan Oregede, @unwomenuganda
